Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Sunday night, August 16, 2026, paid a surprise congratulatory visit to Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke at his country home in Ede following his re-election.
Adeleke was declared winner of the August 15 governorship election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), defeating APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji by 66,252 votes.
Obasanjo Visits Adeleke
Obasanjo arrived in Ede with his ally, Otunba Oyewole Fasawe, hours after INEC formally announced the election result.
The former president was received by Adeleke, who celebrated the visit with dancing and a song of praise. Osun Deputy Governor Kola Adewusi was also present during the meeting.
Obasanjo Gives Adeleke Advice
During the visit, Obasanjo congratulated Adeleke and urged him to focus on delivering good governance during his second term.
He told the governor to “continue to deliver good governance” and “continue to meet the needs of your people,” while also praying for his success in office.
Adeleke thanked the former president for the surprise visit and pledged not to disappoint God, the people of Osun and supporters of democracy.
Adeleke Wins Second Term
INEC declared Adeleke the winner after he secured 511,067 votes against Oyebamiji’s 444,815 votes. The governor won 19 of the state’s 30 local government areas, while the APC candidate won 11.
The visit came amid congratulatory messages from political leaders, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, following Adeleke’s victory.
Video footage of the meeting showed Obasanjo and Adeleke exchanging greetings, holding hands, briefly dancing and embracing as aides watched.
