Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has thanked President Bola Tinubu for congratulating him on his re-election, saying the president’s actions helped ensure that “democracy lives on” after the August 15 governorship election.

Adeleke spoke to journalists in Ede, Osun State, shortly after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared him the winner on Sunday, August 16, 2026.
“I want to seize this opportunity to thank Mr President. Mr President has called me and he has congratulated me, thank you Mr President for making sure democracy lives on because you fought for it,” Adeleke said.
The governor’s remarks were captured in a video aired by News Central and later circulated widely on social media.
Adeleke Wins Second Term
INEC declared Adeleke the winner after results from all 30 local government areas were collated at the state collation centre in Osogbo.
The Accord Party candidate polled 511,067 votes to defeat All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Bola Oyebamiji, who scored 444,815 votes. Adeleke won 19 local government areas, while Oyebamiji secured 11.
African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate Najeem Salaam finished third with 17,180 votes.
Governor Calls for Unity
Following the declaration, Adeleke described the election outcome as a victory for democracy and the people of Osun.
He credited residents for supporting his administration and pointed to areas including infrastructure, education and agriculture while striking a conciliatory tone.
“There is no victor, no vanquished,” the governor said, adding that he expected Oyebamiji to call and congratulate him.
Tinubu Congratulates Adeleke
The president’s call came amid wider reactions to the Osun election, which attracted significant attention because of the political rivalry surrounding the contest.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi and singer Davido, who is Adeleke’s nephew, were among those who also congratulated the governor.
The election gives Adeleke another four-year term after he first won the Osun governorship in 2022 on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform before contesting the 2026 election under the Accord Party.
