In an interview with Guardian UK which was published on the 28th of October, 2022, the director of the popular Nigerian film, ‘Anikulapo’, Kunle Afolayan made some declarations and revealed some stories behind the film and current happenings. According to Kunle Afolayan, Netflix has been pushing for him to continue with the movie, turning it into a series. He revealed that the film, ‘Anikulapo’ was initially gathered as a series but had to be chopped into a movie following instruction from Netflix who in turn promised to pursue the making of a series should the movie become a success. Now that the movie is a success, Netflix is already pushing for the making of a series.

Kunle Afolayan further revealed that he has always believed that his latest Netflix hit, ‘Anikulapo’ would be bigger than ‘Games of Thrones’, adding that it would garner bigger acclaim. Also, he revealed that he has been working on the ‘Anikulapo’ project for six years. He said, “I’ve been working on Aníkúlápó for six years. Originally, I wanted to make a series, but I shopped it and kept telling people that this movie would be bigger than Game of Thrones. Eventually, Netflix told me to make a movie first since I believed in the project that much, and if it became a success, we’d develop a series.”

Recently, Kunle Afolayan announced a spin-off series from the Netflix film which will begin pre-production very soon. Good news for fans all over.

Since its release, the film has maintained an impressive top 10 spot in over five countries including the United Kingdom, Kenya, Nigeria, and the Bahamas.
