African performers have a rich history at the Grammy Awards, spanning from Wizkid to Ali Farka Touré. Musicians that perform Ethio-jazz, Ghanaian drill, high life, or kwassa, among other African musical genres, are eligible to be nominated. But this year, Nigerian Afrobeats artists Burna Boy, ASAKE, Davido, and Ayra Star are standing out in particular: all four of them received nominations. Burna Boy

Burna Boy was nominated for four awards: Best Global Music Performance, Best Melodic Rap Performance (for “Sittin’ On Top Of The World”), Best Global Music Performance (for “Alone”), and Best African Music Performance (for “City Boys”).

Fireboy

Due to his contribution to Jon Batiste’s “World Music Radio,” Fireboy DML was nominated for Album of the Year.

Olamide

Olamide received his first-ever Grammy nomination for collaborating with Asake “Amapiano” in Best African Music Performance.

Asake

For Olamide and Asake’s Collaboration “Amapiano,” Asake was nominated for their first-ever Grammy in the Best African Music Performance category.

Ckay

For his work on Janelle Monáe’s “The Age of Pleasure,” which was nominated for Album of the Year, CKay received a Grammy nomination.

Tems

Tems was nominated for involvement in Rihanna’s song “Lift Me Up.”

Trevor Noah

Trevor Noah is one of the South African Grammy nominees for Best Comedy Album. Trevor Noah was nominated for his Music ”I Wish You Would”.

Musa Keys is one the youngest South African artists to ever be nominated for a Grammy Award. He was nominated in the Best African Music Performance for being featured in Davido’s Unavailable.

Tyla

Tyla is the youngest South African Grammy nominee ever At 21 nominated for Best African Music Performance. Tyla was nominated for her Music ”Water”.

Seun Kuti

For his work on Janelle Monáe’s “The Age of Pleasure,” which was nominated for Album of the Year, Seun Kuti received a Grammy nomination.
