Nigerian businessman Isaac Fayose has defended Catholic bishops, including Cardinal John Onaiyekan, following criticism from supporters of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) over their assessment of the country’s condition.

In a video shared on social media, Fayose criticised those attacking the clerics for describing Nigeria as “bleeding” after their recent meeting with President Bola Tinubu.

Challenges Critics to Experience Nigerian Roads

Fayose said he was willing to sponsor government officials criticising the bishops on a road trip from Abuja to Lagos and back so they could experience the realities faced by ordinary Nigerians.

He argued that such a journey would provide a clearer picture of the country’s infrastructure and living conditions.

The businessman also questioned why many political leaders choose to send their children to schools abroad if Nigeria is performing well.

Criticises Tinubu Administration

Fayose described the current Federal Government as the worst Nigeria has experienced, claiming its supporters would be remembered negatively in the country’s history.

His comments followed the controversy surrounding Cardinal Onaiyekan’s remarks after the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria met with President Tinubu.

According to the cardinal, the bishops informed the President that worsening economic conditions were deepening hardship for ordinary Nigerians, while Tinubu maintained that the economy was improving.

The differing accounts of the meeting have sparked nationwide debate, with government officials and APC supporters defending the administration’s economic policies, while opposition figures and religious leaders continue to express concern over the country’s economic and security situation.
