President Bola Tinubu has directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to return to court and vacate the order freezing the Osun State Government’s accounts, saying the timing of the action could undermine public confidence in the forthcoming governorship election.

The directive comes just days before the August 15 governorship poll in Osun State.

President Raises Concern Over Timing

The EFCC had secured a court order on August 5, 2026, freezing the state’s accounts as part of an investigation into alleged financial infractions, including claims of misappropriating ₦11 billion.

While reaffirming his support for the EFCC’s independence, Tinubu said he was uncomfortable with the timing of the agency’s action.

“I must state that I feel deeply embarrassed not by the EFCC’s exercise of its mandate backed by a court order, but by the timing of the agency’s action,” the President said.

He noted that although he had not been fully briefed on the details of the investigation, the proximity of the election made it necessary to intervene.

Orders EFCC to Vacate Court Order

Tinubu reiterated that anti-corruption and law enforcement agencies must continue to operate independently, professionally and without political interference.

However, he warned that actions capable of creating the perception of political interference should be avoided, especially during an election period.

The President subsequently directed the EFCC to immediately return to court, vacate the freezing order and discontinue the action against the Osun State Government.

Investigation Continues

The directive follows an ongoing dispute between the Osun State Government and the EFCC.

While the state government has denied allegations of financial misconduct, the anti-graft agency has maintained that its investigation is lawful and not politically motivated.

The development is expected to ease tensions surrounding the governorship election as political campaigns enter their final stages.
