President Bola Tinubu has called on state governors to prioritise projects that directly improve the lives of citizens and strengthen security, urging them to stop constructing flyovers in places where they are unnecessary.
The President made the remarks while addressing Nigeria’s security and development challenges, stressing that available resources should be channelled towards projects with greater impact on the people.
‘Build Roads, Not Unnecessary Flyovers’
Tinubu said the worsening security situation in neighbouring Mali, Burkina Faso and the Niger Republic has increased pressure on Nigeria, making it necessary to strengthen internal security.
“You know, the problem of insecurity in Mali, Burkina Faso and the Niger Republic is adding more fuel to our challenges. In fact, that is why we must enhance the capacity of the forest guards, as well as create state police,” he said.
He urged governors to invest more in road networks and infrastructure that would improve accessibility for residents and security agencies.
“You need to help us communicate to these governors. Today, the economy of operation is high. They should do more, instead of flyovers where there’s no traffic, build roads and arteries, network to really enhance the quality of life and accessibility of the security agencies to penetrate those areas,” Tinubu stated.
President Highlights Improved State Revenues
The President noted that state governments are now receiving significantly higher allocations than in previous years, saying the improved financial position should reflect in governance and development.
“Nobody is borrowing money to pay salaries now. Pensioners are receiving their pay and gratuity,” he said.
‘I Accepted the Assets and Liabilities’
Tinubu also acknowledged the enormity of the challenges confronting his administration, describing the task of governing Nigeria as demanding.
“The immediate challenge is monumental. It’s not an easy job. But to me, I asked for the job and I got it. You gave me the support, and I got to do it. I accept the assets and liability of my predecessor. So, that’s the challenge of today,” the President added.
