Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi on Monday, September 7, 2026, attended the inauguration of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) presidential campaign office of Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde in Abuja, where he declared Makinde qualified to lead Nigeria.

The event, held in Wuse II, Abuja, marked the formal opening of the Makinde/Daura presidential campaign headquarters ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Obi Backs Makinde’s Presidential Bid

Obi, who is contesting the 2027 presidency on a separate platform, was seen arriving at the venue, greeting supporters and party officials before speaking at the ceremony.

Addressing the gathering, Obi said Makinde had the qualifications to occupy the highest political office in the country. He said his attendance was also meant to show that the political process should not be driven by desperation.

“We have a candidate who is contesting for president, Seyi Makinde. Is he qualified to be president? Yes, he is qualified. What we are doing today is to show you that, for us, it’s not about desperation. We want the people of Nigeria to make their choice,” Obi said.

He also called for greater unity and inclusion, stressing the need for politicians to put national interest ahead of personal disagreements.

Bala Mohammed Warns Against Underrating APM

Bauchi State Governor and APM National Leader Bala Mohammed also spoke at the event, urging Nigerians not to underestimate the party or its presidential candidate.

Mohammed said the APM was seeking to “reset Nigeria” and described Makinde as one of the best human resources the country has produced.

Makinde Unveils ‘Reset Nigeria’ Agenda

Makinde, in his remarks, outlined a “Reset Nigeria” agenda centred on transparency, accountability and ensuring Nigerians benefit from the country’s resources.

The Oyo governor also rejected any return to the old fuel subsidy regime, as he presented his vision ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Obi’s Presence Draws Attention

Obi’s appearance at the campaign office inauguration has attracted attention because he and Makinde are seeking the presidency under different political platforms.

The development comes as opposition politicians and parties continue to reposition themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections and the expected contest against the ruling All Progressives Congress.
