Who is Bola Ahmed Tinubu?

Bola Ahmed Tinubu, born on March 29, 1952, is a Nigerian politician who currently serves as the president of Nigeria. He was previously the governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007 and a senator for Lagos West.

He played a key role in the formation of the All Progressives Congress and was elected as Nigeria’s president in 2023. Overall, Tinubu has had a significant impact on Nigerian politics and governance.

Biography and Education

Bola Ahmed Tinubu, born into the merchant family of Abibatu Mogaji, the Iyal’0ja of Lagos, started his journey in Lagos.

Tinubu pursued his education in the United States, studying Accounting at Chicago State University. Upon returning to Nigeria, he worked for American companies like Arthur Andersen and Mobil Oil Nigeria.

His political career began in 1991 when he joined the Social Democratic Party. Tinubu’s influence grew as he served as the governor of Lagos State and played a key role in the formation of the All Progressives Congress

Family

He tied the knot with Oluremi Tinubu, a former senator representing Lagos Central, in 1987. Together, they have three children, Zainab Abisola, Habibat, and Olayinka. Prior to their marriage, Tinubu had three children from previous relationships.

His mother, Abibatu Mogaji, passed away at 96 years old on June 15, 2013. Tragically, Tinubu’s son, Jide, also passed away in London on October 31, 2017, Tinubu follows the Islamic faith.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu served as the governor of Lagos State from 1999 to 2007. During his eight-year tenure, he focused on improving the infrastructure of the state to accommodate its fast-growing population.

Tinubu faced challenges, including a struggle with the federal government over the creation of new Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) for Lagos State.

He also encountered conflicts with prominent members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Ultimately, his term concluded in May 2007, when Babatunde Fashola assumed the position of governor.

Career

Bola Ahmed Tinubu had a successful professional career. He worked for respected American companies like Arthur Andersen, Deloitte, and GTE Services Corporation. After returning to Nigeria in 1983, he joined Mobil Oil Nigeria and later became a company executive.

Tinubu’s professional experience and accomplishments laid a solid foundation for his subsequent entry into politics.

The 2023 Presidential Election

In the eagerly awaited 2023 presidential election, Bola Ahmed Tinubu declared his intention to run for president on January 10, 2022. He emerged as the winner of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) party convention vote on June 8, 2022.

After the election took place on March 1, 2023, Tinubu emerged victorious, declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), having garnered a substantial number of votes and defeating his competitors.

On May 29, 2023, Tinubu officially began his presidency, taking the oath of office administered by Chief Justice of Nigeria Olukayode Ariwoola at a grand inauguration ceremony in Abuja’s Eagle Square. His government recognized both domestically and internationally, overcame legal challenges from the opposition.

The swearing-in event was attended by numerous heads of state and government. Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima were honored with prestigious national awards.
