The younger sister of 22-year-old Anthony Obodo has confronted senior Rivers State police officials, including the Commissioner of Police, over the fatal shooting of her brother in Port Harcourt on August 27, 2026.

In a video circulating on social media, she demanded that the officers involved explain why Obodo, whom the family says was unarmed, was shot along the Agip-Ada-George Road.

Sister Demands Answers

Speaking amid a gathering of residents and police officers, the woman said: “He was unarmed and shot multiple times by your police officers. So bring those officers out here and let them tell us why they shot him in broad daylight.”

Smoke was visible in the background of the footage, amid protests that followed the shooting.

Obodo was a recent graduate of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) who was awaiting his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) call-up letter. He was working as a commercial driver when the incident occurred at about 5 p.m. on Thursday, August 27.

Police Give Different Account

The Rivers State Police Command said the shooting followed an altercation and scuffle between Obodo and officers.

The command identified Corporal Alfred Louis as the officer involved, saying the confrontation resulted in gunshots that killed Obodo and injured two passers-by.

Louis was later attacked and assaulted by an angry mob at the scene. Police said he sustained multiple injuries and was transferred, alongside other members of his team, to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for investigation.

Rivers Police spokesperson ASP Blessing Agabe described the incident as “totally condemnable” and said the command would not protect officers found to have acted improperly.

Family Disputes Police Version

Family members and eyewitnesses have disputed the police account, alleging that officers pursued Obodo for more than 30 minutes around the Agip Estate area before the shooting.

One account claims he was shot while inside his vehicle, causing him to lose control and crash into pedestrians. Some reports also allege that several shots were fired, with one bullet striking him in the back and passing through his chest.

The family has further alleged that personal belongings, including a gold chain and rings, were removed after the shooting and that officers took away his vehicle. A passer-by reportedly later took Obodo to a clinic, where he was confirmed dead.

His father, Princewill Obodo, has demanded justice and alleged that the officers may have been paid to kill his son. He has also rejected claims that the deceased was involved in criminal activity.

Protests Follow Killing

The incident triggered protests by youths and residents around the Agip-Ada-George area, with protesters blocking roads and setting tyres on fire.

Rivers State Commissioner of Police Olugbenga Adepoju visited the area, condemned the incident and confirmed that the officers involved were in custody. He also said he had contacted the family and promised further engagement with those involved.

As of early September 2026, the officers remain detained while investigations continue. No final determination has been announced on the circumstances of Obodo’s death or whether criminal charges will be filed against any officer.
