1. Presidential Candidates, Parties Sign National Peace Accord Ahead of 2027 Elections
Presidential candidates, political party leaders and National Assembly aspirants have signed the first National Peace Accord ahead of the 2027 general elections. The ceremony, held in Abuja on Tuesday, was convened by the National Peace Committee and attended by INEC Chairman, the Inspector-General of Police and other political stakeholders.
President Bola Tinubu was represented by Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, while candidates including Peter Obi and Omoyele Sowore signed the accord in person. The agreement commits political actors to peaceful and issue-based campaigns while rejecting hate speech, violence, intimidation, ethnic and religious mobilisation, misinformation and the misuse of artificial intelligence and social media.
2. NDLEA Arrests Socialite KC Luxury, Seizes Record 184.5kg Cocaine Consignment
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has arrested social media influencer Afolabi Kazeem Micheal, popularly known as KC Luxury, over the interception of 184.5 kilogrammes of cocaine at a Lagos courier company. NDLEA said the consignment, valued at about $27.7 million, is the largest cocaine seizure recorded through a courier operation by the agency.
KC Luxury was arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport while attempting to board a business-class flight to Paris. NDLEA Chairman Buba Marwa said the operation disrupted an international cartel allegedly using Nigeria as a transit route from South America to Europe and Asia. Cash, jewellery and exotic vehicles were also recovered as investigations continue.
3. Nigeria’s Headline Inflation Falls to 15.43 Percent in July
Nigeria’s headline inflation rate declined to 15.43 per cent in July 2026 from 15.91 per cent in June, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. Month-on-month inflation also eased to 1.57 per cent, while core inflation dropped to 14.97 per cent.
Food inflation, however, increased to 20.31 per cent year-on-year as prices of staples including rice, tomatoes, onions, garri, beef and eggs remained high. The figures point to continued moderation in overall inflation while households still face significant pressure from food and other essential expenses.
4. Lakurawa Terrorists Kill 28 in Sokoto Community Attack
The Sokoto State Police Command has confirmed that 28 people were killed when Lakurawa terrorists attacked Ungushi community in Kebbe Local Government Area. The attack, which occurred on Sunday evening, also claimed the life of the Chief Imam of the local Izala Jumu’at Mosque.
The General Officer Commanding 8 Division of the Nigerian Army visited the area to assess the situation and reassure residents.
