JAMB Examination

The 2022 JAMB examination has finally ended (See How to Check Your JAMB Result)But, this article will focus on the aftermath. It is obvious that the desire of every JAMB candidate is to secure admission into a higher institution. Passing JAMB is just one of the requirements for attaining this.

In previous years, we have seen students who scored 300+ in JAMB but were not offered admission.

» In 2019, 679 JAMB Candidates Scored above 300 but not offered admission (See Reasons)
» Only 34,734 Out of 436,799 Candidates That Applied for Medicine Offered Admission

Given the above instances, now you know that passing JAMB doesn’t automatically hand you the admission ticket. There are certain things you need to ensure you put in place to be considered for admission. Hence, we shall be focusing on the things you must do to secure admission into a higher institution in Nigeria.

Before you proceed, you may want to know How JAMB Admission is Distributed.

#1. Check If You Meet the Cut-off Mark

We understand that the JAMB cut-off mark for Universities is 160, Polytechnics is 120 while Colleges of Education is pegged at 100. But, that’s just the basic minimum requirement.

Each institution and course also has its cut off mark. It is important that you’re conversant with how schools fix departmental Cutoff Marks to determine the cut off mark for your chosen institution and course.

So, after checking your JAMB result, confirm if you meet the cut-off mark for your institution and/or course.

#2. Check Institution/Course Competitiveness

Having met the cut-off mark for your chosen institution and course, this is your next stop. You have to check how competitive the institution and course you have chosen is. Then, you’d be able to relate it with your JAMB score and determine your chances of admission to that course or institution.

For instance, if the cut-off mark for Mass Communication at the University of Lagos is 240 and your score is 245. Oh, you might get lucky, but trust me, your chances of admission are extremely low. Considering how competitive Mass Communication is at UNILAG, your best bet would be to apply for a Change of Institution or Course.

If you are keen on studying Mass Communication, you should change your institution to a university that has a lower cut off mark for Mass Communication. And if you are bent on studying at UNILAG, you should change to a course with a lower cut off mark.

#3. Check Subject Combination

This is quite one of the biggest reasons JAMBITES are denied admission. Besides your JAMB subject combination, your O’Level subject combination must also match your desired course and institution requirements.

So, make sure that both your JAMB and O’Level Subject combinations tally with the requirements of your desired institution and course.

#4. Confirm Your Result is Uploaded

This is mostly applicable to candidates who used Awaiting Result (A.R) when registering for JAMB. If you want to be considered for admission at all, you must ensure that your O’Level Result is uploaded to the JAMB portal.

Also, I advise those who already uploaded their results at the point of JAMB registration to confirm that their result is uploaded. There are instances where results already uploaded are erased from the JAMB server, or incorrectly uploaded. Ensure you confirm that your result is uploaded and accurate. If not, visit the nearest JAMB CBT centre or office to re-upload your result.

#5. Apply for Post UTME

Yes, you read it right! It’s funny that some JAMB candidates still miss out on this very important step for securing admission. Some people believe that after JAMB, their chosen institution will automatically give them admission.

No, it doesn’t work like that. Passing JAMB qualifies you for admission quite alright, but institutions also conduct post UTME to screen you.

For some institutions, all you have to do is fill out their online Post UTME form and upload your documents. Your documents will then be screened, and — if found eligible — you will be offered.

While other institutions like UNILORIN, after filling their online Post UTME form, you will sit for an examination. The result of the examination with then be combined with your JAMB result to offer you admission — if you meet the Post UTME Cut off.
