5 Things Every JAMB Candidate Must Do to Gain Admission

Needless to mention that meeting the institution cut off, as well as that of the Course you are applying for, is paramount to your admission.

It is equally vital that you meet the required O’Level qualification and have the right subject combination for your desired course/institution.

Much more than this, we would be looking at the seemingly little, yet important things you must do to be considered for admission.

  1. First Choice of Institution
  2. Result Upload To School Portal
  3. Result Upload To JAMB Portal
  4. Update A’Level Examination Number
  5. Acceptance and Admission Letter

You may refer to our article on Why You May Not Gain Admission This Year to see the things you mustn’t do as a student seeking admission.

So, let’s discuss the above-listed reasons briefly.

First Choice of Institution

For UTME candidates, JAMB allows you to select four institutions: Two Universities (Federal, State or private), a Polytechnic and a College in no particular order.

Direct Entry (DE) candidates, on the other hand, are allowed to choose two universities only.

Candidates are expected to fill in these institutions in order of their preferences.

In order to be considered for admission, never make the mistake of choosing a Federal University as a second choice.

Truth is, Federal Universities are the most competitive when it comes to admission, so putting them as second choice places you at risk.

Also, some state universities don’t accept second choice but most state universities do.

Besides, if your second choice institution offers you admission, you are expected to go and change such institution on your JAMB portal to your first choice.

This must be done for JAMB to acknowledge the admission and issue an admission letter to you accordingly.

Result Upload to School Portal

This is a mistake most students who use awaiting result make over the years.

After JAMB, you will need to register for Post UTME. Some universities conduct Examination while others only conduct online screening based on your qualifications.

If your WAEC, NECO, NEBTEB or A’Level result has not been released as at the time your choice institution begins sales of its Post UTME or Admission Form, you are permitted to fill in awaiting result.

However, the university will not consider you for admission unless you update your result from awaiting result.

Hence, it is imperative that every student who is using awaiting result ensure they upload their result on the school portal as soon as it is released.

Result Upload to JAMB Portal

This is also mostly applicable to students using awaiting result.

May I state that there are two forms of admission – School admission and JAMB CAPS Admission.

Recently, the JAMB registrar stated that any admission not through JAMB will be considered illegal.

This tells that even if you are offered admission by your school of choice and JAMB doesn’t offer you admission, you are still an aspirant.

By now, you must have noticed that no school issues admission letter anymore, they now refer you to print it on JAMB portal.

Hence, it is important that as you pay attention to your School admission requirements, you pay attention to JAMB’s as well.

Update A’Level Examination Number

All DE candidates should take note of this. Beyond uploading your result grades, you are expected to also update your examination number.

This is because no A’Level student (IJMB or JUPEB) has been assigned an examination at the time of obtaining DE form.

Consequently, it will be filled with AWAITING, A.R. or… However, it is a basic requirement necessary for the verification of the result and admission process.

In previous years, updating of A’level examination number is done alongside upload of the result.

However, things have changed recently. Now, you have to upload your result as well as apply for JAMB correction of data to update your A’level exam number.

Acceptance and Admission Letter

Majority of students often get this wrong. Understand that admission can be reversed if it has not been accepted.

In some schools, you may be required to validate your admission by paying up your acceptance fee within a stipulated period of time.

Non-compliance to this can lead to the revert of your admission status. So please adhere.

Additionally, the position of Admission Letter can not be sidelined as it has become paramount of late.

Recently, JAMB stated that any Admission not offered through JAMB is considered illegal.

Sequel to this, all students must (in addition to the admission offered by their school of choice) possess an admission letter issued by JAMB.

Note that JAMB only offers admission letter for the institution you choose as your first choice.
