The Origin of Wigwe University
Dr. Herbert Wigwe, the Chairman and CEO of Access Bank Holdings, has initiated the establishment of a private university in his hometown of Isiokpo, Ikwere Local Government Area, Rivers State.
This marks a significant milestone for Isiokpo, as Dr. Herbert, an accomplished individual from the community, held a meeting with the Isiokpo council of chiefs and other stakeholders to lay the foundation for a world-class university in the area.
Dr. Herbert assured everyone that the first batch of students would commence classes in September 2024. He appealed to individuals and the community as a whole to support the university’s projects.
He also mentioned that the university and the surrounding community would have access to uninterrupted electricity once the institution is fully operational.
Things to know about Wigwe University
Dr. Herbert emphasized that the university’s primary focus would be on nurturing a fearless generation of youth who will become confident future leaders. Here are some other important details about the institution:
- Construction: The university is located on a 400-hectare land, where 200 different buildings are planned for construction.
- International Perspective: Wigwe University aims to employ 40% of its academic staff from abroad. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to participate in a one-year Industrial Training (IT) program abroad.
- Faculty Composition: The university will have 60% Nigerian academic lecturers and 40% foreign instructors, providing a diverse educational experience.
Support from the Rivers State Government
Governor Nyesom Wike supports Wigwe University to help it succeed in Rivers State.
During the foundation laying ceremony in Isiokpo, Governor Wike stated that education is a crucial focus for his administration. He believes that nothing can match the importance of human capital development that education offers.
Governor Wike praised Dr. Herbert Wigwe, the founder of Wigwe University and the Group Managing Director of Access Holdings, for bringing this investment to benefit the state. He also proposed scholarship support from the Rivers State Government for students of the university.
