  • Anti-Tinubu Petition Hits 2,000 Signatures as Campaign Lists 500 Reasons for President’s Resignation

An online campaign demanding the resignation of President Bola Tinubu has surpassed 2,000 signatures, drawing attention to growing criticism of the administration’s handling of security, economic and governance issues.

The petition, hosted on 1000reasons.vote, had recorded 2,074 signatures as of June 24, 2026, according to organisers.

    Campaign Lists 500 Grievances

Titled “An Open Letter to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu – 1000 Reasons,” the initiative presents 500 documented complaints grouped under 22 categories.

Organisers said the petition was created to hold the government accountable and to document what they described as failures in leadership since Tinubu assumed office in May 2023.

The campaign references Tinubu’s previous criticism of former President Goodluck Jonathan during periods of insecurity and economic challenges.

    Security and Economy Dominate Complaints

Among the issues highlighted are insecurity, civilian deaths, kidnappings, terrorist attacks and economic hardship.

The petition cites incidents including military airstrikes that reportedly resulted in civilian casualties, mass abductions of schoolchildren and recurring attacks by armed groups in different parts of the country.

It also points to rising fuel prices, inflation, naira depreciation and worsening food insecurity as evidence of economic distress affecting millions of Nigerians.

    Supporters Back Resignation Call

The campaign has attracted support from some opposition figures, activists and members of the public who argue that the government has failed to meet expectations.

Supporters of the initiative have used the hashtag #TinubuResignNow on social media to promote the petition and encourage additional signatories.

The organisers maintain that the listed grievances are backed by publicly available reports and data, urging Nigerians to independently verify the claims.

    Government Defends Reforms

The Tinubu administration has repeatedly defended its policies, arguing that reforms such as fuel subsidy removal and exchange rate adjustments were necessary to stabilise the economy.

Government officials have highlighted improvements in foreign reserves, increased FAAC allocations to states and economic growth figures as evidence that the reforms are yielding results.

Supporters of the president have dismissed the petition as politically motivated and insist that the administration should be judged at the end of its tenure.

    Debate Continues

The petition reflects the sharp divide in public opinion over Tinubu’s leadership nearly three years into his administration.

While critics point to persistent hardship and insecurity, supporters argue that difficult reforms are laying the foundation for long-term economic recovery.

  • Motorist Challenges Civilian Working With Police at Checkpoint, Video Draws Reactions

A video showing a motorist confronting a civilian assisting police officers at a roadside checkpoint has generated widespread reactions on social media.

The incident, which was captured in a now-viral clip, highlights growing concerns among Nigerians about the presence of unidentified civilians at security checkpoints.

    Motorist Demands Identification

In the video, the motorist repeatedly questioned a man dressed in Ankara attire who was helping to stop vehicles alongside uniformed police officers.

The civilian, who was seen holding a wooden stick, reportedly claimed that his identification card was with the police officers at the checkpoint but failed to produce any form of identification during the exchange.

The motorist insisted on knowing the man’s authority to stop motorists, attracting the attention of bystanders who gathered around the scene.

    Video Triggers Online Debate

The incident quickly gained attention online, with many social media users praising the motorist for challenging what they described as the involvement of unofficial personnel in police operations.

Several commenters identified such individuals as “camp boys,” a term often used to describe civilians who allegedly assist security personnel at checkpoints.

Some users claimed they had witnessed similar situations on major roads across the country, expressing concerns about accountability and transparency during roadside checks.

    Concerns Over Checkpoint Operations

The video has also renewed discussions about the role of civilians in law enforcement activities and the need for proper identification of anyone involved in security operations.

Critics argued that the presence of unidentified individuals at checkpoints could create opportunities for abuse and undermine public confidence in security agencies.

Others stressed the importance of citizens knowing their rights and seeking clarification when approached by persons whose official status is unclear.

    Calls for Greater Accountability

The incident has further fuelled conversations about police reform and checkpoint practices in Nigeria.

As of the time of filing this report, the Nigeria Police Force had not issued an official statement regarding the viral video.

The clip continues to attract reactions online, with many Nigerians calling for stricter enforcement of rules governing checkpoint operations and the activities of individuals working alongside security personnel.

    Nigerian Victim Dies in Hospital

Police said the deceased, a middle-aged Nigerian man, had been staying at the facility for several days before the fire broke out.

He was initially rushed to a nearby hospital before being transferred to Safdarjung Hospital, where he later died from injuries sustained in the blaze.

Authorities confirmed that the Nigerian Embassy had been notified of the development.

The latest casualty increases the number of foreign nationals killed in the fire to 13.

    Police Intensify Investigation

Delhi Police have continued investigations into the tragedy, with efforts focused on locating two key hotel officials, identified as accountant Jay Mishra and manager Rakesh, who remain at large.

Police have already arrested the hotel owner and the facility’s cook, Keshav Negi, in connection with the incident.

Investigators said three hotel employees were present when the fire broke out, including Negi, manager Rakesh and another staff member.

According to police findings, the fire allegedly started in the hotel kitchen after sparks were noticed in an air fryer.

Authorities claimed Negi fled the scene after noticing the malfunction instead of alerting occupants or contacting emergency responders.

Police said his actions formed part of the basis for his arrest.

    Reconstruction of Incident Underway

On Sunday, officers took Negi back to the hotel to assist in reconstructing the sequence of events leading to the fire.

Investigators questioned him about how the fire started and his actions immediately afterward as they sought to establish accountability.

The arrest has attracted attention in Uttarakhand, where Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said he had spoken with Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta following claims by Negi’s family that he was innocent.

Dhami said Gupta assured him that the investigation would be guided strictly by evidence and that no innocent person would be punished.

He also revealed that he had spoken with Negi’s daughter and promised support for the family.

Negi, who lives in Dilshad Garden, East Delhi, with his wife and two children, had reportedly worked at the hotel for about two years before the incident.

The consul stressed that the initiative is not limited to major investors but also targets entrepreneurs, skilled professionals and small business owners looking to expand internationally.

He encouraged Nigerians to view Grenada as more than a tourist destination, describing the Caribbean nation as a platform for business growth and regional market access.

“We want Nigerian investors to see Grenada not simply as a Caribbean destination, but as a strategic business platform,” he added.

The development was disclosed on X (formerly Twitter) by business analyst Bolaji Fesomade, who claimed that some individuals openly submitted their account numbers to be credited during the live interaction.
