Spain have been crowned champions of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating defending champions Argentina 1-0 after extra time in Sunday’s final at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Ferran Torres scored the only goal of the match in the 106th minute, sealing Spain’s second World Cup title and ending Argentina’s reign as world champions.

Torres Delivers Historic Winner

After a goalless 90 minutes, Torres broke the deadlock just 39 seconds into the second half of extra time.

The goal came after Pedro Porro’s cross found Nico Williams at the back post, with Williams setting up Torres to fire past Emiliano Martínez from close range.

Spain Dominate the Final

Spain controlled most of the contest, creating numerous chances but repeatedly denied by Martínez, who produced a series of outstanding saves to keep Argentina in the game.

Argentina struggled to threaten Spain’s defence and finished the match with 10 men after Enzo Fernández was sent off in stoppage time following a second yellow card.

Second World Cup Title

The victory gives Spain their second FIFA World Cup crown, 16 years after lifting the trophy for the first time in South Africa in 2010.

Luis de la Fuente’s side completed the tournament unbeaten, adding the world title to the UEFA European Championship they won in 2024.

Lionel Messi, appearing in what is widely expected to be his final World Cup, was unable to inspire Argentina to back-to-back titles as Spain ended La Albiceleste’s title defence.
