Career
Samuel Adekugbe made his professional debut with MLS club, Vancouver Whitecaps FC on October 27, 2013 in the final game of the 2013 season were the club won 3-0 against Colorado Rapids. His debut came almost exactly two months after he signed with the club (August 28, 2013).
On July 15, 2016 Adekugbe was loaned to Brighton for the entire season after being invited to train at the English Football League Championship club and Hove Albion. On August 9 of the same year, Adekugbe scored his first professional goal while still at the club. The goal was scored in a 4-2 victory over Oxford United in the 2nd round of the 2016/2017 EFL Cup. He also started his first Championship game in a 2-0 defeat against Preston North End on January 14, 2017.
In 2018, Adekugbe was signed to Eliteserien club Vålerenga on a four-year deal. He eventually played 94 games with the club. We would not fail to mention his loan to Allsvenskan club, IFK Göteborg on loan on July 25, 2017 for the remainder of the year’s season.
It wasn’t until 2021 that Adekugbe signed a three-year deal with Turkish Süper Lig side, Hatayspor, making his debut on August 12 in a match against Kasımpaşa.
International Career
Sam Adekugbe is eligible to represent either Nigeria (since he is a citizen by descent), England (by reason of his citizenship by birth) and Canada, his country of residence.
Before joining the Senior team, Adekugbe was part of the U-18 squad for Canada as well as the U-20 squad. He made his professional debut in the senior squad in a match against Caribbean nation, Belize on September 8, 2015. He was equally added to the Canadian squad for the 2015 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Sam Adekugbe scored his first goal for Canada in the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifier against the U.S on January 30, 2022. He is part of the 2022 FIFA World Cup squad representing Canada in Qatar.
