Manuel Akanji was born on July 19, 1995, in Neftenbach, Switzerland. His mother is Swiss by descent while his father is Nigerian. Akanji has two sisters and one of them, Sarah Akanji, is equally a footballer like him. The other is a politician for the Social Democrats.

While there are no official records of his educational background, the footballer completed his vocational training as a ″Kaufmann″ (Tradesman) in 2017. At the time of the completion of his vocational training, he was already a professional footballer. He also exhibited top-notch skills in mental calculation on Swiss TV in 2018.

Football Career

Youth and Basel Club Career

Like many other professional footballers, Akanji did not begin his professional football career as a senior. He began his youth career at Wiesendangen. In May 2007, the youngster featured in the U-18 team of FC Winterthur and subsequently joined a second team.

Akanji made his Swiss Super League debut in September 2015 after it was announced in April of the same year that he would transfer to Basel for the 2015/2016 Super League season. He however won the league championship at the end of the season for a second time. The club won the Swiss Cup for the 12th time, winning 8 titles in a row and 20 championships in total.

The footballer went ahead to play in the 6 games that Basel featured in during the 2017/2018 UEFA Champions League. The club could feature in the games as a result of their title as Swiss Champions. Akanji however featured in the entire 90 minutes of the games, helping the club finish the League in the second group position, thereby qualifying for the next round of the games.

Career at Borussia Dortmund and Manchester City

In January 2018, Manuel Akanji transferred to Borussia Dortmund during the winter transfer window. He was reportedly transferred for 18 million euros for a four-and-a-half-year contract scheduled to terminate in June 2022. He scored his first goal for the club in September of the same year in a match against the German Association Football Club, 1. FC Nürnberg. The match ended in a 7-0 victory in favor of Borussia Dortmund.

During the 2019/2020 season, however, Akanji was highly criticized and spotted as a weak link in the team during their match against Bayern.

After the termination of his contract with Borussia Dortmund in June 2022, the footballer signed with Premier League Champions, Manchester City on a 5-year contract lasting till 2027. He signed the deal on September 1, 2022, for a reported fee of 15 million euros. Not long after, in the same month, he made his debut for the club in a match against Spanish Professional Football Club, Sevilla in the UEFA Champions League group stage. The match started in a 4-0 away win in favor of Manchester City.

Akanji’s Premier League debut is attributed to Manchester City as the Swiss professional footballer featured in a match against Wolverhampton Wanderers on September 17, 2022. He was voted as the Etihad player of the month for October 2022.
