First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has urged Nigerians to preserve the country’s cultural identity by embracing traditional clothing, saying she plans to wear bùbá and wrapper more often if President Bola Tinubu is re-elected for a second term.
She made the remarks while speaking at a recent event where she highlighted the beauty and comfort of indigenous fabrics.
Why She Prefers Akwete Fabric
The First Lady said she loves Aṣọ Òkè but finds it uncomfortable to wear frequently because of its weight and texture.
“I love Aṣọ Òkè, but it’s too heavy for my head nowadays. Some are so stiff, and they bruise me,” she said.
She praised Akwete fabric for being softer and more breathable, describing it as a comfortable option for everyday use.
Second-Term Fashion Plan
Remi Tinubu said she would adopt bùbá and wrapper more regularly if her husband secures another term in office.
“If God brings my husband in a second term, I’ll be wearing a bùbá and wrapper because it’s very soft, breathable cotton,” she said.
She added that wearing African attire has consistently attracted admiration, even during international engagements.
“There’s nowhere I stand in the world, even the white person is always in awe,” she said.
Calls for Cultural Preservation
The First Lady encouraged Nigerians to continue wearing traditional outfits and ensure younger generations remain connected to the country’s cultural heritage.
“We shouldn’t let our children forget that,” she said.
