Anschutz was born in Russell, Kansas, to Marian and Frederick Benjamin Anschutz. His father made investments in ranches and, later, in oil drilling. Carl Anschutz, his grandpa, immigrated from Russia and founded a bank.
Anschutz grew up in Russel, and he also lived in Wichita and Hays, Kansas, He graduated from high school in Wichita in 1957 and earned a business degree from the University of Kansas in 1961, where he was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity.

Anschutz took charge of his father’s oil-drilling business, scoring big in Wyoming and amassing extensive land holdings in 1961. His acquisitions, including Baughman Farms in Kansas and millions of acres on the Wyoming-Utah border, led to a major oil find, ranking him among the top 100 US landowners.
In 1984, he ventured into railroads by acquiring Rio Grande Industries. Overseeing the Southern Pacific Railroad purchase and its merger with Union Pacific, he ascended to vice chairman. Anschutz also held positions on boards in the oil industry.
