Ted Field was born on June 1, 1953, in Chicago, Illinois, to Marshall Field IV and Katherine Woodruff Fanning.
After Field’s parents split up, his mother, Katherine, married Larry Fanning, who then became Field’s stepfather. They all moved to Anchorage, Alaska, along with Field’s sisters.
In 1967, Field’s mother and stepfather bought the Anchorage Daily News from its founder, Norman C. Brown.
Unfortunately, Larry Fanning passed away in 1971. Kay Fanning, Field’s mother, continued to run the paper until 1979 when she sold it to The McClatchy Company. She stayed on as the publisher until 1983.
