The Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove, also known as the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Woodland, is a sacred forest located on the banks of the Osun River just outside of Osogbo, Osun State, Nigeria. Before widespread urbanization, the Osun-Osogbo Grove was one of the last of the sacred forests that generally bordered the boundaries of most Yoruba cities.

The Sacred Grove was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005, in recognition of its global significance and cultural worth. The Osun-Osogbo Forest was desecrated in the 1950s, with shrines neglected and priests abandoning the grove as traditional responsibilities and sanctions lessened. Prohibited activities such as fishing, hunting, and tree felling were carried out in the grove until an Austrian, Susanne Wenger, arrived and put an end to the abuse.

Susanne Wenger created various deity sculptures and artworks for this UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s a mystical sacred grove on the banks of the Osun River that’s home to Yemoja, the fertility goddess.
