The Delta State Police Command has reacted to the viral video showing a suspect being shot by a police officer in Effurun, with spokesperson Bright Edafe saying the incident remains difficult to explain. He added that “spirituality may not be far from it,” as investigations continue.
Edafe spoke during a live interview on Channels Television on Wednesday, addressing the growing outrage surrounding the incident.
Viral Video Shows Handcuffed Suspect Shot
Footage circulating online shows a man with his hands cuffed behind his back pleading before being shot by an officer. A police bus at the scene was marked “Effurun Area Command,” linking the incident to operatives in Delta State.
The killing, widely described as extrajudicial, reportedly occurred on April 26 during an operation based on intelligence from members of the public.
Police Say Officer Violated Operational Rules
In an earlier statement, the command said the victim, identified as 28-year-old Mene Ogidi, was arrested while attempting to waybill a parcel suspected to contain a Beretta pistol with four rounds of ammunition.
According to the police, the officer leading the team, ASP Nuhu Usman, acted outside established procedures. The command said he violated Force Order 237 and the Nigeria Police Force’s standard operating guidelines by discharging his firearm.
Edafe Admits Difficulty Explaining Officer’s Action
Reacting to the development, Edafe said the command is still trying to understand what led to the shooting. He described the situation as one of the most challenging moments in his role.
“Having an incident that cannot be explained is very difficult. There is no explanation for this,” he said. He added that while the police cannot formally attribute the act to spirituality, “that may not be far from it.”
Officer Arrested, Disciplinary Process Underway
The police confirmed that the officer involved has been arrested and transferred to Abuja to face disciplinary proceedings. Authorities say further investigation is ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
The case has drawn widespread attention across social media and news platforms, intensifying calls for accountability.
Incident Revives Concerns Over Police Conduct
The killing has renewed public concern over the use of force by security operatives, coming nearly six years after the #EndSARS protests against police brutality. The latest development is expected to keep pressure on authorities as demands for transparency and justice continue to grow.
