The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has proposed an annual ₦200 levy for students and is considering making proof of payment a criterion for mobilisation into the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
NANS National President Akinteye Babatunde disclosed the proposal in Facebook posts and a video over the weekend and on Monday, August 10, 2026.
NANS Explains Proposed Dues
Babatunde said NANS plans to work with the NYSC so that students could be required to present a dues payment receipt before being cleared for orientation camp.
“We will be working with NYSC and one of the criteria to be mobilised for camp is NANS dues receipt,” he wrote.
He described the proposed payment as minimal, saying it would amount to ₦200 per student for an entire year.
“This is not an avenue to stress the students further because the due is as low as 200 Naira per student in a year, 200 Naira one year per student,” Babatunde said.
Association Wants Direct Collection
Babatunde said NANS is considering collecting the money through a dedicated platform rather than relying on student union governments or school managements.
According to him, the association has struggled to receive expected capitation from some of the intermediaries responsible for collecting or remitting funds.
The proposed direct system would allow NANS to manage its funding more independently.
Funds to Support NANS Structures
The NANS president said proceeds from the proposed dues would be distributed across the association’s structures at the zonal, state and affiliated levels.
He said the arrangement would support NANS operations and strengthen its ability to represent students’ interests.
The proposal has generated attention among students and education stakeholders, particularly because of the suggested connection between payment of NANS dues and NYSC mobilisation.
NYSC Yet to Adopt Proposal
The proposed ₦200 annual dues and NYSC mobilisation arrangement have not been confirmed as an official NYSC policy.
NANS is still considering the proposal and any implementation involving NYSC would require the relevant authorities to formally approve and adopt the arrangement.
