List of countries supporting Russia's invasion of Ukraine

Amidst the brouhaha and fear the dispute has caused, I know you are curious to know the list of countries supporting Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. If this is you, we will discuss everything you need to know about it in this article.

In a televised address on Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a special military operation in Ukraine and dispatched 150,000 troops to the Ukrainian border. On the 24th of February, Ukraine Police reported that Russia had carried out 203 assaults.

The truth is, Ukraine’s plan to join the anti-Russian coalition was the key catalyst for Russia to conduct a large build-up across the border. NATO said in 2021 that it welcomed Ukraine and Georgia’s bids to join the Euro-Atlantic bloc.

In order to compile a list of countries supporting Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, we must also keep in mind what Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Twitter: “The goal of this operation is to protect people who, for the past eight years, have been confronting genocide perpetrated by the Kyiv regime. To that end, we will work to demilitarize and denazify Ukraine, as well as prosecute those who have committed heinous crimes against civilians.”

Cuba is another country on the list of countries that support Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Because it is a close ally of Russia, it has thrown its support behind Putin. Iran is another country on the list of countries that support Russia’s invasion. They blamed NATO for the crisis and supported Russia. The Iranian Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir Abdollahian, said, “The crisis is rooted in NATO’s provocations.”

“NATO’s provocative moves are at the foundation of the Ukraine issue,” the foreign ministry declared.

“We do not believe that going to war is the best solution. It is essential to create a ceasefire and focus on a political and democratic solution,” it added. According to the Times of Israel, Iran and Russia are considered allies.

4. North Korea

The supreme leader of North Korea Kim Jong Un came openly in Putin’s support and demanded the US to cease its hostile policy for isolating Russia.

Syria is also another country supporting Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.  President Bashar al-Assad spoke with Putin on the phone on February 25 and voiced “strong support for Russia’s special military operation,” according to a tweet from the Russian Embassy in Sri Lanka.

According to Al Jazeera, Al-Assad informed Putin that Russia’s incursion is a “correction of history and restoration of balance in the globe that was lost following the dissolution of the Soviet Union.”

When chatting with Putin, he also criticized the US and NATO’s stance on the situation, according to the Russian Embassy.

According to Reuters, Russian ally Venezuela in South America has criticised US and NATO efforts, claiming that they have heightened tensions without blaming Russia.

“The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela expresses its concern about the deterioration of the crisis in Ukraine and laments NATO’s mockery and violation of the Minsk agreements, which is being aided by the United States of America,” Venezuela’s foreign ministry said on Feb. 24, according to the outlet.

“The derailment of these (Minsk) treaties has breached international law, posed serious risks to the Russian Federation, its territorial integrity, and sovereignty, and hampered good neighbourly relations.”

It is not funny to say that Nicaragua was one of the first countries to express its support for Russian President Vladimir Putin. Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega blamed Ukraine for inciting the conflict by seeking membership in NATO.

8. India

Another country supporting Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is India. India had been historically allied with Russia under the era of the Soviet Union, according to the Associated Press.

Similarly to China, India hasn’t expressed outright support or condemnation of Russia’s invasion.

India’s Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi spoke with Putin over the phone on Feb. 24 regarding Ukraine and “reiterated his long-standing conviction that the differences between Russia and the NATO group can only be resolved through honest and sincere dialogue,” a news release said.

Modi “appealed for an immediate cessation of violence, and called for concerted efforts from all sides to return to the path of diplomatic negotiations and dialogue.”

The prime minister also expressed concern over “the safety of the Indian citizens in Ukraine, especially students.” “The safety of Indian citizens in Ukraine, particularly students,” the prime minister expressed concern.

China has attempted to create a diplomatic balance between Russia and Western countries. China’s foreign minister, Wang Yi, urged all parties to “exercise prudence.”

On the one hand, China cannot support Russia’s invasion of Ukraine since it would harm its relations with Western nations, while on the other hand, Chinese President Xi Jinping is looking forward to improving relations with Russia.

Although no other foreign leaders have met with Putin in person since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics are Russia’s tiny allies in eastern Ukraine. Only Russia recognizes the two breakaway entities in Ukraine. They both announced a civilian evacuation and a general mobilization of the military on Friday.
