Early Life and Education

Kyle Kuzma was born on July 24, 1995, in  Flint, Michigan. He grew up with his mom, Karri Kuzma, and stepfather, Larry Smith, who was like a dad to him. They put a toy basketball hoop in their living room when he was two, and that’s when he fell in love with basketball.

Basketball was his safe place. He went to different schools, transferring to Bentley High School in Michigan. In junior year, he excelled, averaging 17.9 points, 14.4 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 3.4 blocks per game.

He sent tapes of his basketball skills to prep schools, and Vin Sparacio, head coach at Rise Academy in Philadelphia, noticed his talent and brought him in. During his senior year there, he averaged 22 points and seven rebounds per game. Kuzma had offers from Division I schools, but he chose the University of Utah.

In 2013, he joined the University of Utah. He had to sit out his first year as a freshman due to signing late. In his sophomore year, he became a starter and averaged 10.8 points per game. As a junior in 2016-17, he did even better with averages of 16.4 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game, earning him All-Pac-12 honors. After that season, he entered the 2017 NBA draft, leaving college early. He graduated from the University of Utah with a sociology degree.

Career

From 2017 to 2021, Kuzma played for the Los Angeles Lakers. He was picked 27th overall in the 2017 NBA draft by the Brooklyn Nets, but the Lakers got him in a trade for D’Angelo Russell and Timofey Mozgov.

In the 2017 NBA Summer League, Kuzma had a great start. He played seven games, starting in six, and was the leading scorer for the Lakers. Kyle averaged 21.9 points, 6.4 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.4 blocks, and 1.1 steals per game. He was even named to the All-Summer League Second Team and became the Summer League Championship Game MVP.

Kuzma’s regular season debut as a starter was on November 3, 2017, and he did well, scoring 21 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. In his early games, he was a top scorer for the Lakers and was named the Western Conference Rookie of the Month for October and November. He was the first rookie ever to get at least 330 points, 120 rebounds, and 30 three-pointers in his first 20 games.

Kuzma continued to impress, even setting a career-high of 38 points in one game. He also played in the Rising Stars Challenge during the 2018 NBA All-Star Weekend and was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team.

In the 2018-2019 season, Kuzma had another career-high game, scoring 41 points against the Detroit Pistons. He also earned MVP honors in the Rising Stars game.

2020-

In 2020, Kuzma scored a game-winning three-pointer, lifting the Lakers to a win against the Denver Nuggets. He had a career-high 19 points in Game 3 of the NBA Finals, and the Lakers won the championship.

In December 2020, Kuzma signed a $40 million contract extension with the Lakers.

Then, in 2021, Kuzma was traded to the  Washington Wizards for Russell Westbrook. He made his debut with the Wizards in October, and he continued to perform well. He scored 36 points in one game and even had a career-high 22 rebounds in another.
