Luc Mbah a Moute, who was from the same city in Cameroon and an NBA player, found him at a basketball camp. Mbah a Moute became his mentor, and when Joel was 16, he moved to the United States to chase his dream of being a basketball star.

Joel went to Montverde Academy, where Mbah a Moute had gone, but he switched schools after his first year because he wasn’t getting enough playing time. He ended up at The Rock School, a Christian school in Florida. In his last year there, he led the team to a great record and won a state championship, averaging 13.0 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks per game.
