From 1981 through 1989, when he was elected US President, his father, a prominent politician, served as the 43rd US Vice President for two terms. Prior to his passing on November 30, 2018, he was also a member of the US Congress. The Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy was founded by Bush’s mother, a former US first lady.

With his five siblings, John Ellis “Jeb”, Neil Mallon, Marvin Pierce, Dorothy Koch, and Pauline Robinson “Robin” Bush, who passed away from leukemia at the age of three, George W. Bush grew up in Texas. John Ellis “Jeb” Bush, his younger brother, is a well-known politician. He ran for president in the 2016 US presidential election and served as the former governor of Florida.

George W. Bush finished his undergraduate studies at a number of high schools, including The Kinkaid School and Phillips Academy, according to his educational accomplishments. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University and a Master of Business Administration from Harvard Business School. He was the only president of the United States to possess this certification.

The American businessman joined the Texas Air National Guard in 1968 after receiving his degree. He was formally discharged from the Air Force Reserve six years later. In 1978, Bush ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the US House of Representatives. Despite his defeat, George W. Bush persevered in his 1994 bid for governor of Texas and won that election from 1995 to 2000. Career

When he was chosen as the chairman of the Harris County (Texas) Republican Party in February 1963, President Bush began his career in politics and government service. From Texas’ Seventh District, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1966, where he served for two years. President Bush held a number of high-ranking positions before serving as Ronald Reagan’s vice president from 1981 to 1989, including ambassador to the United Nations (1971–1973), chairman of the Republican National Committee (1973–1974), head of the American Liaison Office in China (1974–1976), and director of central intelligence (1976–1977).

Vice President of the United States

By demonstrating his commitment to Reagan as vice president, Bush worked hard to gain the support of the President’s advisors. Reagan supporters were wary of Bush’s upbringing in New England and his affluent background, which contrasted sharply with Reagan’s modest origins and his capacity to relate to the average American. Additionally, they believed Bush was too moderate and not a real follower of Reagan’s conservatism. However, over their two terms in power, Reagan and Bush appeared to truly warm up to one another. Weekly lunch dates were held, and both couples enjoyed each other’s company, despite some accounts claiming that the Bushes were resentful because they were never asked as guests to the President’s private quarters.

For the administration, Bush oversaw a variety of task teams, including those on regulatory reform and narcotics and drug smuggling. He made numerous relationships that would be helpful when he was elected president during his extensive travels and regular representation of the administration in foreign matters while serving as vice president. The vice president frequently participated in and occasionally affected the administration’s debates on foreign policy.

His involvement in the administration’s foreign policies, however, nearly permanently wrecked his career. The  Iran-Contra scandal first surfaced in November 1986. The controversy involves the administration giving guns to Iran in exchange for the release of hostages held by a terrorist group in Lebanon while also using some of the proceeds to fund the Contras, a rebel force battling the Sandinista government in Nicaragua. Selling weapons to Iran was against American policy, and obtaining weapons for the Contras was illegal. The incident caused a number of Reagan administration officials to quit. The rumors that Bush was somehow involved in the whole thing hurt him hard.

Awards and Honors

After leaving office, President Bush was given high honors by countries including Kuwait, the United Kingdom, the Federal Republic of Germany, Nicaragua, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Saudi Arabia, among others. He has also earned a number of honorary degrees. The Intercontinental Airport in Houston, various primary and secondary schools in Texas, and the Central Intelligence Agency’s headquarters in northern Virginia all bear the former president’s name.

The USS George H. W. Bush, the tenth and final Nimitz-class supercarrier in the Navy’s fleet, was commissioned on January 10, 2009, at Norfolk Naval Station in Virginia. Since then, it has traveled to various locations throughout the world to support American foreign policy goals. Finally, on February 15, 2011, in a White House ceremony, President Bush received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama.

Controversies

Bush was one of the politicians and Hollywood heavyweights accused of sexual harassment in late 2017. His alleged transgressions go at least as far back as 1992, while the majority of the allegations arise from more recent incidents. Jim McGrath, a representative for Bush, said that the charges stemmed from the former president’s wheelchair inability to reach beyond waist level when posing for pictures with ladies.

At 93 years and 166 days old, Bush formally broke the record for the longest-serving president in American history on November 25 of that year. Ronald Reagan, who had 93 years and 120 days on his record, came in third place, surpassing the previous record held by Gerald Ford. Jimmy Carter overtook Bush as the longest-living president after his death.

Their marriage was blessed with twin daughters, Barbara and Jenna Bush, four years later.

Barbara works as the nonprofit’s executive director and is a co-owner of GlobalHealth Corps. While Jenna, her sister, is a writer and journalist. She is a co-host of the fourth hour of the NBC news program Today With Honda & Jenna. George W. Bush is the grandpa of Margaret and Poppy Louise since she is married to Henry Hager and has two kids.

Death

On November 30, 2018, at the age of 94, Bush passed away at his home in Houston after a protracted struggle with vascular  Parkinson’s disease. He was the longest-living U.S. president at the time of his passing, a record Jimmy Carter currently holds. He was the third-oldest vice president. Bush was the 12th U.S. president to be given this distinction, and he did so from December 3 through December 5 in the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol.
