Marshall Bruce Mathers III was born October 17, 1972, in St. Joseph, Missouri, United States. Mathers had a turbulent childhood, marked by poverty and allegations of abuse. At age 14 he began rapping in clubs in Detroit, Michigan and when unexcused absences kept him in the ninth grade for the third year, he quit school and was determined to make it in hip-hop music.

When his family was living in Detroit, their home was in a majorly black neighbourhood and thus Eminem was also a victim of racial beatings during that time. His mother would often throw him out of the house, and neglect him. Whenever she went to play Bingo, Eminem would turn up his stereo and start writing songs.

In the 90s, Eminem began to develop his violent alter ego in the form of slim shady. He was discovered at a national battle rap competition where he was awarded the second position.
