Biography

Daddy Lumba was born on born 29 September 1964  in a village called Nsuta Amangoase in the Sekyere Central District, near Mampong in the Ashanti Region. He was born to Owoahene Kwadwo Fosu, a teacher, who died when Lumba was only a child and Comfort Gyamfi, popularly known as Ama Saah.

Daddy Lumba began his music career at the age of 16. He was the leader of the Juaben Senior High School choir from 1983 to the 1984 academic year. In Juaben SHS, Lumba formed the Lumba Brothers group with his friends Yaw and Kwabena and his girlfriend, Theresa Abebrese.

After his secondary education, he travelled to Germany to seek greener pastures, where he met Ernest Nana Acheampong who introduced him to highlife music. The pair formed another group called Lumba Brothers, the same name as his first group when he was in Juaben.

The pair planned to release an album “Yɛɛyɛ Aka Akwantuo Mu” in 1986 but due to financial constraints, the album was released in 1989 and was produced by Lumba’s wife, Akosua Serwaa.  He has since then released 33 albums and has established himself as one of Ghana’s most popular singers of the Highlife genre.

Before 2002, Daddy Lumba releases a hit album, every year. This consistency has won him multiple awards in and outside the country. In 1999, he won three awards including Best Album, Artist of the Year and the Most Popular Song of the Year at the Ghana Music Awards.

According to reports, Daddy Lumba owns his own studio where he does all his work and also owns machines for mastering, cassette duplication, loading, printing and shrink wrapping exclusively for his works. His music has evolved over the years to reflect the changes in taste and demands for music.

His critically acclaimed albums include Aben Wɔha, Awosuɔ, Obi Ate Me So Buɔ, Sika Asɛm and Ebi Se Ɛyɛ Aduro.

Aside from his own musical success, Daddy Lumba is also responsible for springing the career of over 13 different Ghanaian musicians. He introduced and shot Ofori Amponsah into the limelight through his blockbuster hit album Woho Kyere in 1999.
