American actor and singer Tyrese Gibson has announced that he is heading to Nigeria, describing his trip to Africa as a homecoming and highlighting his ancestry.
Gibson made the remarks in videos circulating online, including footage shared by Pulse Nigeria on August 22, 2026.
“I’m Coming Home”
In the videos, Gibson is seen preparing for and boarding a commercial flight while speaking about his African roots.
“I’m on my way to Africa. I’m coming home,” he said, adding that he considers himself “99 percent African and 1 percent American.”
Gibson also thanked people who connected him with Nigerian Afrobeats star Burna Boy and confirmed that Nigeria is part of his trip.
He said he turned down an offer to travel by private jet, opting instead to take a commercial flight.
Ancestry Results Link Him to Nigeria
Gibson’s comments follow DNA ancestry results he previously shared publicly after taking an AncestryDNA test.
The results indicated about 82 per cent African ancestry, including 22 per cent from Cameroon/Congo, 18 per cent from Benin/Togo, 17 per cent from Senegal, 13 per cent from Nigeria and 6 per cent from Ivory Coast/Ghana.
The test also indicated about 15 per cent European ancestry, alongside smaller percentages from other regions.
Gibson subsequently described himself as “truly African-American” while discussing the findings.
Gibson Plans African Connections
The actor has previously spoken about visiting countries connected to his ancestry and learning more about his African heritage.
Recent posts also referenced a planned stop in Johannesburg, South Africa, where he expressed interest in meeting elders, connecting with communities and learning more about African history and culture.
Gibson is widely known for his roles in the Fast & Furious and Transformers film franchises, as well as his career as an R&B singer.
His latest videos have generated positive reactions from many Nigerians and other social media users, particularly around his decision to visit Nigeria and reconnect with the continent.
