Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has said he will not seek the Nigerian presidency again if he loses the 2027 general election.
Atiku made the declaration during a Hausa-language interview on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, as he prepares for another presidential contest under the ADC.
Atiku Rules Out Another Bid
Asked whether he would launch another presidential campaign if he loses in 2027, Atiku gave a direct response.
“No, I have said it before, right from this election, I will not contest again,” he said.
The declaration would make the 2027 election potentially Atiku’s final attempt at the presidency after several previous campaigns under different political platforms.
Former Vice President Addresses Health Concerns
Atiku also responded to questions about his health and ability to serve as president.
“No doctor has declared that I am unfit in terms of health. I know my body, I know I am healthy, and I do not have a single defect,” he said.
The comment comes amid recurring public discussions about the age and health of presidential candidates ahead of the 2027 election.
Atiku Urges Nigerians to Vote
The ADC candidate also called on registered voters to participate actively in the 2027 election.
“First of all, I appeal to those who have voter cards, for their own sake, their families, and their future, to go out and vote,” Atiku said.
He urged voters not only to cast their ballots but also to remain at polling and collation points where permitted to ensure that their votes are properly counted.
“That is the solution to the problems they are facing. After going out to vote, they should also stay, escort, and ensure that those votes are counted,” he added.
Atiku Emerges as ADC Candidate
Atiku secured the ADC presidential ticket during the party’s primaries earlier in 2026 and has since positioned himself as one of the major opposition figures challenging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027.
There have also been reports of internal disagreements within the ADC, including claims by a faction disputing aspects of Atiku’s candidacy. Major reports, however, continue to identify him as the party’s presidential candidate.
His latest declaration adds a new dimension to the 2027 contest, particularly given his long history of seeking the presidency and his decision to make another attempt at the highest political office.
