Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has sued President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Federal High Court in Abuja, seeking his disqualification from the 2027 presidential election over an alleged forged NYSC certificate.

Atiku, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, appeared at the court registry on Friday, August 14, 2026, to depose to an affidavit supporting the suit filed against Tinubu, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Atiku Cites Constitution

The suit relies on Section 137(1)(j) of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, which provides that a person is not qualified to contest the presidency if they have presented a forged certificate to INEC.

The plaintiffs also cited other constitutional provisions and sections of the Electoral Act 2026 in their challenge to Tinubu’s eligibility.

NYSC Certificate Allegation

In his affidavit, Atiku alleged that the NYSC discharge certificate submitted by Tinubu to INEC bears the name “Tinubu Bola Adekunle” rather than Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The plaintiffs further alleged that the document was presented in connection with the 2023 and 2027 presidential elections and claimed it was not obtained by Tinubu.

The allegations are contained in the court filings and remain subject to determination by the court.

Atiku Wants Tinubu’s Election Documents

Atiku and the ADC are asking the Federal High Court to determine whether the alleged discrepancy and other claims concerning the NYSC certificate constitute grounds for Tinubu’s disqualification from the 2027 presidential election.

They have also put INEC on notice to produce Tinubu’s Form CF001 submitted for the 2023 and 2027 elections.

The case introduces another legal challenge to Tinubu’s 2027 eligibility as political parties begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 presidential election in Nigeria.
