Oyo School Principal Recounts 56 Days in Captivity, Says Airstrikes Became Bigger Fear Than Kidnappers

The Principal of Community High School, Ahoro-Esiele, in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, Mrs. Rachael Alamu, has narrated the traumatic experience of spending 56 days in captivity, saying the intensified military airstrikes during the rescue operation became more frightening than the kidnappers themselves.

Alamu shared her testimony during a thanksgiving service at Antioch Baptist Church in Ogbomoso on Sunday, where she reflected on the ordeal she endured alongside pupils and fellow teachers after they were abducted on May 15, 2026.

“We Feared the Missiles More”

According to the principal, the final week of captivity was the most difficult as security forces intensified aerial bombardments of the forest where they were being held.

“Just one instance, apart from seeing the hand of God right from the beginning, the seventh week was the hardest for us all. That was when the troops increased their air raids. It was so intense and persistent that at one point, the fear of the bandits became secondary.

“We were just praying that missiles would not be accidentally dropped on us. But God kept us because we were so exposed, only covered with polythene bags and grasses,” she said.

56 Days in Captivity

Mrs. Alamu was among dozens of pupils, teachers and other victims abducted after armed men attacked schools in Oriire Local Government Area on May 15.

The victims were reportedly marched deep into the forest, where they endured hunger, exhaustion and harsh living conditions throughout their captivity.

She said despite the suffering, their faith remained strong until they eventually regained their freedom.

Thanksgiving After Rescue

During the thanksgiving service, the school principal expressed gratitude to God for preserving her life and those of the other survivors.

She also appreciated President Bola Tinubu, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, security agencies and Nigerians for their prayers and support throughout the period of captivity.

The victims were rescued in July following security operations that brought an end to the 56-day ordeal.
