One victim reportedly died in captivity

According to the report, 15 worshippers were abducted during the attack, but one of them died while in captivity.

The remaining 14 victims were said to have returned in critical physical and emotional condition after enduring more than two months in the kidnappers’ custody.

Makama said the victims are currently receiving medical attention as health officials assess their condition.

The attackers reportedly killed the officiating pastor before abducting 15 members of the congregation and taking them to an unknown destination.

    Authorities yet to speak

  • Police Deny Banditry Allegations in Viral Katsina Checkpoint Video

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has rejected allegations that a viral video from Katsina State showed police officers allowing armed bandits to pass through a checkpoint, describing the claims as false and misleading.

In a statement issued on June 24, 2026, the Force said the individuals seen in the footage were not bandits but members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) and registered hunters working with security agencies in Katsina State.

Police Clarify Identities in Viral Video

The clarification followed widespread circulation of a video that sparked public outrage after social media users alleged that police officers were openly interacting with armed bandits at a checkpoint.

According to the Force, the armed men captured in the video were community security volunteers supporting ongoing operations in Musawa and Matazu Local Government Areas of the state.

Police said the footage merely showed a routine interaction between an officer and the volunteers as they moved to a designated operational area.

    NPF Condemns Misinformation

The Force accused those behind the allegations of deliberately distorting facts to create panic and undermine public confidence in security institutions.

It said the narrative attached to the video was intended to mislead Nigerians and frustrate ongoing efforts to tackle insecurity in affected communities.

“The individuals featured in the video are not bandits. They are duly recognised members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria and registered hunters actively supporting security operations,” the statement said.

    Warning Against False Information

The police warned individuals and groups against circulating unverified information capable of threatening public peace and security.

It noted that legal action could be taken against those found deliberately spreading false information.

The Force also urged Nigerians to rely on official communication channels for accurate information regarding security operations and developments across the country.

    Commitment to Community Policing

The NPF reiterated its commitment to working with legitimate community-based security groups and other stakeholders to combat crime and protect lives.

The statement was signed by Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Okokon Edem Iniedu.

Freed residents of Ngoshe community in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State have shared disturbing accounts of their three-month captivity in the hands of terrorists, describing starvation, deaths and inhumane conditions during their ordeal.

The victims, who were recently reunited with their families, were among hundreds abducted during a March 2026 attack on the community.

    Survivors Describe Harsh Living Conditions

One of the survivors, Halima Musa, said the captives survived mainly on guinea corn, which was provided by their abductors but cooked by the victims themselves.

She explained that food was limited to once a day, leaving them to endure long hours of hunger.

“We ate only guinea corn, once a day. If you ate around 2 p.m., you would have to wait until the next day before eating again. Sometimes, there was no soup,” she said.

According to her, the captives slept on bare floors in mountainous terrain and had limited access to water throughout their captivity.

    Children Died During Captivity

Another freed captive disclosed that at least six children died while in captivity due to illness and poor living conditions.

“While in captivity, we lost six children — two boys and four girls. They died after falling sick,” she said.

Some of the victims also alleged that their abductors had a system of food distribution, suggesting possible supply networks supporting the group across different locations.

One source said they observed food being dropped and redistributed, raising suspicions about organised logistics behind the terrorists’ operations.

    Mass Abduction and Release

Recall that about 360 people were abducted during the attack on Ngoshe on March 4, 2026, with women and children making up the majority of the victims.

Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum confirmed that a total of 357 captives were recently released, while others had regained freedom in smaller batches over time.

According to the governor, the total number of those freed now stands at 434, following coordinated efforts involving security agencies and local vigilante groups.

    Government and Security Response

Zulum commended President Bola Tinubu, the military, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Civilian Joint Task Force, forest guards, vigilantes and hunters for their roles in securing the victims’ release.

He also announced plans for the rehabilitation of Ngoshe community and support for displaced residents, including food and medical assistance for those recently freed.

The victims are currently undergoing medical evaluation and psychosocial support before being fully reintegrated into their communities.

The incident adds to growing concerns over insecurity in parts of Borno State, where communities continue to face repeated attacks despite ongoing military operations.

  • Some Nigerians Reportedly Drop Bank Account Details for Bandits During Alleged TikTok “Giveaway”

Some Nigerians have reportedly shared their bank account details with suspected bandits during a TikTok live session, in hopes of receiving part of money allegedly linked to kidnapping ransom payments across the country.

The development was disclosed on X (formerly Twitter) by business analyst Bolaji Fesomade, who claimed that some individuals openly submitted their account numbers to be credited during the live interaction.

    Alleged TikTok “Giveaway” Raises Concern

Fesomade alleged that a suspected bandit conducted a TikTok live session where users were invited to drop account details, with some reportedly receiving funds said to be part of ransom proceeds.

He warned that such actions could attract scrutiny from security agencies, noting that funds traced to criminal activity could lead to arrests and prosecution.

“The average citizen enables crime. When DSS traces his funds to you, expect arrest & jail time alongside him,” he wrote.

    Mixed Reactions on Social Media

Another user, identified as Danny of Owerri, supported the claim, alleging that the individuals involved were informed that the money being shared came from kidnapping ransom.

He said this did not stop some users from still submitting their account details for payment.

A legal practitioner, Foundational Egi Nupe, also expressed concern, questioning the reported incident and describing it as alarming if true.

    Backlash and Hardship Debate

    Assembly Opposes Ransom Talks

Speaking on the matter, the Speaker of the House, Adebo Ogundoyin, said engaging kidnappers in negotiations could embolden criminal groups and encourage more attacks.

According to him, government efforts should be directed towards rescuing the victims and strengthening security structures rather than opening discussions with their captors.

“Negotiating with kidnappers could encourage further attacks. Efforts should remain focused on rescue operations, intelligence gathering, and strengthening security across the state,” he said.

    Call for Permanent Military Presence
