Birth and Education
William Samoei Arap Ruto was born on December 21, 1966, in Sambut village, Kamagut, Uasin Gishu County, Kenya. He had his primary education at Kerotet Primary School and his secondary education at Wareng Secondary School.
Having completed his high school education at Kapsabet Boys High School in Nandi County, he received a BSc in Botany and Zoology from the University of Nairobi. He graduated from the university in 1990 and later enrolled for an MSc in Plant ecology, graduating in 2011.
Although he encountered several setbacks after enrolling for his Ph. D in 2012, he eventually finished and was awarded a Ph.D. from the University of Nairobi, where he graduated on December 21, 2018.
Ruto is known to have been an active member of the Christian Union during his university days. He flexed his leadership skills at the university when he served as the Chairman of the University of Nairobi’s choir. He also authored several papers including one titled “Plant Species Diversity and Composition of Two Wetlands in the Nairobi National Park, Kenya”.
Political Career
Through Ruto’s church leadership activities at the University, he met with President Daniel Arap Moi who introduced him to Kenyan politics during the 1992 general elections.
His political career began when he emerged as the treasurer of the YK’92 campaign group. The group was in charge of lobbying for the re-election of then-President Moi in 1992. After the 1992 elections, however, the YK’92 was disbanded by President Roi and this saw Ruto attempting to compete for various KANU positions all to no avail.
At the 1997 Kenyan general election, Ruto ran for a parliamentary seat and beat the incumbent, Reuben Chesire, and some others to the surprise of many. Although his win did not sit well with Moi, Ruto eventually gained favor with the president and became KANU Director of Elections. He also became the assistant minister in the Home Affairs (Interior) ministry docket and was promoted to be the full Cabinet Minister in the ministry due to the resignation of some officials.
In 2005, Ruto was elected as KANU Secretary General with Uhuru Kenyatta serving as Chairman. Later on, in 2013, Ruto became the Deputy President of Kenya while Kenytta became president. He later acted served as the Acting President of Kenya between October 5th and 8th, 2014 when Kenyatta was away at the Hague.
In December 2020, Ruto declared his alliance with the United Democratic Alliance party. Although he has been elected as president-elect, the politician is still the deputy president of Kenya.
