As it is rightly said; “He who fails to plan, has plan to fail”. Invariably, if you don’t plan your admission properly, you are likely to lose it.

As critical as this question appears to be, the answer lies in the little things we overlook and take for granted. For some, it is a result of ignorance or misinformation.

Having carefully studied the causes of this mishap, we decided to share it with our readers as well as recommend possible remedies.

Why Students Fail to Secure Admission

Highlighted are some of the possible reasons you may not be offered admission.

1. Wrong UTME Subjects Combination

As basic as this is, many students still fall prey due to misinformation and lack of proper guidance.

You are advised to carefully check the JAMB Brochure before proceed to apply for JAMB so as to know the correct subject combinations for your desired course of study.

PS: If you need help with your subject combination, you can leave a comment below so that we can help you confirm if your combinations are correct

2. Wrong O level Subjects Combination

This has been identified as a major reason many candidates are being denied admission despite other qualifications.

To be fully eligible to study a course, it is necessary that you have a minimum of 5 credits in five subjects relevant to the course you intend to study.

Say you want to study Biochemistry, you are expected to have at least five credits in English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology and Physics.

In some schools, the fifth course has to be Physics while in others, any other science subject is allowed as the fifth subject.

That been said, it is important that you know the subject combination that fits your desired course of study.

PS: You can leave a comment below so that we can help you confirm if your combinations are correct

3. O Level result combination

Candidates seeking admission into a tertiary institution will either use his/her WAEC, NECO, GCE, NABTEB result or a combination of any two (2 sittings).

However, there have been questions on whether some universities accept two (2) sittings.

Truth is, most schools accept two sittings but one sitting candidates are given higher preference in the admission hierarchy, which is normal.

Nonetheless, some schools like the University of Lagos only accepts one O level result from its admission candidates.

So, if you are choosing a school like this for admission, you are expected to use one O level result.

4. False state of origin claim

Falsifying your state of origin is always an issue in state universities where indigenes get a bursary and subsidized tuition. Tertiary institutions like Lagos State University (LASU) take this seriously.

Ensure that the state of origin used for your application form tallies with every other official document that bears your state of origin.

5. Cut-off Mark

This became a little controversial as the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board recently lowered the cut-off mark for universities to 140, while polytechnics and colleges of education were pegged at 120 and 100 respectively.

Meanwhile, some universities are pertinent on setting their minimum cut off mark to 180.

However, first generations like the University of Ibadan and University of Lagos UNILAG only consider only candidates who scored 200 in their UTME exams.

So, if you want to be admitted to any of these schools, your UTME must not be less than 200.

Irrespective, to meet school cut off is one thing but meeting the cut off mark for the desired course as set by your desired institution is another.

It is important that candidates meet both requirements in order to be considered for admission.

6. Age

Age is another factor people often overlook when applying for admission. The minimum official age for admission to Nigerian universities is 16.

Before a candidate can be admitted, he/she must have reached the age of sixteen (16) by the time admission processes commences for the academic session (usually 31st of October).

7. Examination malpractice

There is a consolidated notion of examination malpractice amongst students nowadays, and this notwithstanding has been one of the reasons why many students don’t gain admission into the university.

In an attempt to curb this, examination bodies in the country have devised new ways to catch perpetrators.

In 2017, about 40% of the students who wrote the WAEC examination had their results seized and withheld about 180,205 candidates’ results in 2019.

This is a major reason many students are being denied admission. Thus, it is Imperative to say that examination malpractice is a cogent reason many students don’t gain admission into the university.

8. Lack of information/Misinformation

They say information is Power. Undoubtedly, lack of authentic information is one major reason many students don’t gain admission into the university.

In this present time, there are lots of fraudster and fraudulent websites whose main objective is to sway and misinform students with the sole aim of duping them or just to gain attention.

Some years ago, WAEC announced that a particular website which many students had thought was authentic, is actually fake.

You never can tell how many students have been denied admission because of that website. So, it is not just about getting information, it is about getting authentic information.

To read authentic and reliable Educational News, always visit RNN. We post only verified and authentic News so, rest assured, you cannot be misinformed by us.

Believe it or not, there are students who were not admitted simply because they were not aware of their school screening date.

It is important to cultivate the attitude of surfing the Internet in search of valuable information. If you are not informed, you will surely be deformed.

9. Low JAMB Scores

Logically, having a low JAMB score reduces your chances of admission. However, you stand a good chance at gaining admission if you play your cards well.

By playing your cards well, I mean, if you apply for non-competitive courses, you are most likely to be offered admission with ease.

Some of these non-competitive courses include Education courses (Ed.).

For instance, if you apply for Economics whose cut-off marks is 200 and you score 200 or below, it’s best you apply for a change of course to maybe BSc. (Ed.) Economics whose cut-off is 180 to increase your chances of admission.

Meanwhile, if your score is relatively low, but you don’t want to change from your dream course, you can apply for A’level programmes such as IJMB or JUPEB.

These programmes run for a duration of 6-9 months and afford you the opportunity to secure admission into 200Level to study any course without using your UTME result. Basically, you get to meet your mates in 200Level. For Enquiries, Call 07063153798.

In Conclusion, we wish every aspirant the best of luck.
