Biography
Nicky Oppenheimer was born on the 8th of June 1945 to Bridget McCall and Harry Oppenheimer, a prominent South African businessman, and industrialist.
Harry Oppenheimer was considered South Africa’s foremost industrialist for four decades as he was the chairman of Anglo American Corporation for 25 years and chairman of De Beers Consolidated Mines for 27 years until he retired from those positions in 1982 and 1984 respectively.
The family grandfather, Earnest Oppenheimer was one of the first chairmen and board members of the De Beers, he built and consolidated the company’s global monopoly over the diamond industry until his death in 1957. He also founded the Anglo American Corporation with financial assistance from J.P Morgan. During this time, he was involved in a number of controversies, including price-fixing and trust behaviour, and was accused of not releasing industrial diamonds for the U.S. war effort during World War II. As the grandson of the Oppenheimer family, Nicky was the heir to the family fortune.
Education and Career
Harry began his education at Harrow School in London and furthered at the Christ Church, Oxford, where he read Philosophy, Politics and Economics. He however joined the Anglo American Corporation in 1968, was appointed a director in 1974, and then became deputy chairman in 1983. He resigned in 2001, remaining a non-executive director until 2011.
He was appointed deputy chairman of the Diamond Trading Company in 1984, and deputy chairman of De Beers Consolidated Mines in 1985. He was also appointed chairman of the Diamond Trading Company in 1985. Chairman of the De Beers Group from 1998 to 2012, he retired when he sold the family 40% stake in De Beers to Anglo American for $5.1billion in cash in 2012.
