It is no longer news that the Nigerian Comedy industry is a goldmine. The Industry has been responsible for establishing a few numbers of millionaires and celebrities in the country. With data obtained from reliable sources on the web, we have decided on the top 20 richest comedians in Nigeria.

But Before diving into the list,  it is imperative to take a look at the metamorphosis of the Nigerian Comedy Industry.  The commercialization of the industry was nonexistent, 60 years ago. It has however grown to be 3rd largest Entertainment industry in Nigeria, generating an income of over ₦50 billion annually.

The Industry is in its third generation phase and has been able to amass the stipulated wealth, thanks to endorsements from Multinational brands.  Also, many of the stakeholders are now hosting their independent comedy shows, thereby generating a fortune in the process. According to a Vanguard report in 2014, Basketmouth’s Uncensored show records a minimum of 100 million generated revenue annually.

Also, many of these comedians have begun to digitalize their art, thanks to platforms like Instagram and YouTube, and have been able to make millions in the process. Some others ventured fully into Filmmaking, Comedians like  AY, Basket Mouth, and Bovi, have been able to generate a huge amount of their wealth by venturing into filmmaking.  With all that being said, here is a list of the richest comedians in Nigeria.

1. AY Makun (₦3.2 Billion)

He is generally regarded as a businessman than a Comedian due to his involvement in several firms and entities across the entertainment industry.

Aside from being the host and producer of the biggest comedy show in Africa, AY Live. Ayo Makun has also left a mark on the Nigerian movie industry as a producer and actor in some of the highest-grossing movies in the country. Despite starting his career as PA to Alibaba, the Nigerian comedy Legend, AY Makun has proven himself as one of the greatest to do it in the country.

Ayo Makun is also the Chief Executive Officer of Corporate World Entertainment, Nigeria. Although born into a royal family, Ali Baba began his professional career performing at corporate events and appearing on television and shows. He became more prominent and began hosting several comedy events across the 36 States of the federation. He is the most-awarded comedian in the country with over 15 accolades to his name.

Being one of the pioneers in the industry he established an annual comedy event called Spontaneity for thriving and budding comedians to make a name. One of the notable proteges to come out of the platform is the popular Woli Arole, who was a finalist in the 2016 edition of the competition.

Ali Baba maintains the philosophy that his business is big enough for all who want to make comedy their chosen profession. As such, he supports, mentors, and presents several comedians helping to ensure that standards are maintained and professionalism encouraged.

Although he ventured into the Nigerian entertainment industry as a rapper, Basket mouth registered himself as one of the greatest the comedy industry has ever seen thereby making a fortune in the process.

He has organized popular stand-up comedy concerts like Basketmouth Uncensored across the globe. In 2005 and 2006, Basketmouth won the National Comedy Award and the awards for Best Stand-up Comedian of the Year. He was nominated in the 2021 maiden edition of The Humour Awards Academy alongside fellow comedian Mr. Funny.

He however furthered his career as a Standup Comedian the following year, performing in Nights of a Thousand Laugh, one biggest comedy shows in the country. Bovi held his first stand-up special at the prestigious Eko convention center and has since then registered his name as one of the biggest in the Industry.

He has organized popular stand-up comedy concerts like Bovi: Man on Fire across the globe. Bovi also ventured into acting and film-making. His first movie It’s Her Day grossed 55 million Naira at the Nigerian box office. He was nominated for the AMVCA awards as the best actor in a comedy in 2017.

Before his career as a comedian, Gbenga worked as a corporate affairs manager in an engineering firm. He began his entertainment career as an Anchor for several television programs and attained the limelight with his “Shine Shine Bobo promo” for ‘The Star Game Show.

Seyi began his professional comedic career in 2007, right after he came into popularity by winning the AY Open Comedy competition in September of 2006. He has since then featured in numerous comedy shows in Nigeria and abroad. He also hosts an annual comedy tour in and outside Nigeria.

He has since grown gradually to be one of the reckoning forces in the Nigerian Comedic Industry, hosting and organizing different shows across the country such as the annual Igosave Unusual.
