1. University of Ibadan (UI)

The University of Ibadan (UI) is unarguably the best university in Nigeria now. It was established almost immediately after world war two (WWII) in 1948. And as the first university in Nigeria, it did not become a full-fledged university, until 1962.  The university comprises sixteen (16) faculties altogether.

2. University of Ilorin (UNILORIN)

The University of Ilorin is located in the ancient of Ilorin. It was established in 1975 by the then Federal Military Government and the school is a federal owned institution. Over the past decade, Unilorin has topped the list of most applied universities in Nigeria which makes its admission competitive.

The University of Ilorin has fifteen (15) faculties altogether.

3. Lagos State University (LASU)

Lagos State University is one of the most preferred state universities in terms of student’s choice. The university is the only state in the former British Colony, established in 1983 by the Lagos state government.

The university has been unrelenting in the pursuit of its mission of becoming a citadel of learning, a community with the trademark of excellence in teaching, research and service to humanity.

There are eleven (11) faculties in the university.

4. Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA)

FUTA was established in 1981 by the drive to create a university that specialized in the theoretical knowledge of technology and produces graduates in such respect. In 2015 it was ranked as the eighth (8th) best and as the best technological university in Nigeria by webometrics. There are seven (7) faculties called schools in the institution.

5. Ahmadu Bello University Zaria (ABU)

ABU Zaria is one of the popular universities in sub-Saharan Africa. According to reports it occupies around 7000 hectares of land placing it on the list of one of the largest universities in the region. It was established in 1962.

Ahmadu Bello University was ranked No. 1 University in Nigeria for 2017 by the National Universities Commission (NUC). It claimed the top spot out of a hundred Universities ranked by the commission, comprising public and private universities. Meanwhile, in Webometrics list of top 30 Nigerian Universities based on openness, Ahmadu Bello University was ranked 10th in Nigeria.

6. Federal University of Technology Minna (FUTMINNA)

As a technology-based school, FUTMINNA has gained recognition internationally.

FUTMINNA specializes in technological education. The University is a designated Centre of Excellence in Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering and has a core competence in the development of vaccines and It was established in 1983.

Altogether, the Federal University of Technology Minna (FUTMINNA) consists of Ten (10) faculties referred to as schools.

7. University of Lagos (UNILAG)

The Great University of Benin also known as UNIBEN is one of Nigeria’s first generational universities. 9. University of Abuja (UNIABUJA)

The University of Abuja, UNIABUJA was established in 1988 and only has 10 faculties, excluding centres and colleges.

11. Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU)

Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife is one of three Universities established in Nigeria between 1961 and 1962. The university was founded in 1961 and classes commenced in October 1962 as the University of Ife by the regional government of Western Nigeria, led by late Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola, and was renamed Obafemi Awolowo University on 12 May 1987 in honour of Chief Obafemi Awolowo (1909–1987), the first premier of the Western Region of Nigeria, whose brainchild the university was.
