Tribunal admits Chicago University, NYSC certificates against Tinubu

A Federal High Court in Lagos has admitted into evidence the Chicago University degree certificate and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharge certificate of the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu.

The documents were tendered before the court by a human rights activist and public interest litigator, Mr. Mike Enahoro-Ebah, who appeared as a star witness in the petition the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Mr Atiku Abubakar, filed to nullify the outcome of the presidential election that held on February 25.

Abubakar had challenged Tinubu’s eligibility to run for president on the grounds that he did not have the requisite educational qualifications.

However, Tinubu’s lawyer, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), presented the certificates to the court as evidence of his client’s qualifications.

The certificates were admitted into evidence by Justice Ekwo after Olanipekun argued that they were relevant to the case. Justice Ekwo adjourned the case until July 12, 2023, for further hearing.

The admission of the certificates is a major victory for Tinubu, as it could help to invalidate Abubakar’s challenge to his eligibility.

It remains to be seen whether the court will rule in Tinubu’s favour, but the admission of the certificates is a significant step in his favour.

Here are some additional details about the case:

  • The suit was filed by Abubakar on February 16, 2023, shortly after Tinubu declared his intention to run for president.
  • In his suit, Abubakar alleged that Tinubu did not have the requisite educational qualifications to run for president.
  • He pointed to the fact that Tinubu had claimed in his 2007 affidavit that he had attended the University of Chicago and obtained a degree in business administration.
  • However, Abubakar alleged that Tinubu did not actually attend the University of Chicago and that he did not have the degree he claimed to have.
  • Tinubu’s lawyer, Olanipekun, denied the allegations and said that Tinubu had the requisite educational qualifications to run for president.
  • He presented the Chicago University degree certificate and the NYSC discharge certificate to the court as evidence of Tinubu’s qualifications.
  • Justice Ekwo admitted the certificates into evidence on Tuesday, June 21, 2023.
  • The case has been adjourned until July 12, 2023, for further hearing.
