1. Old Arts Building, New Zealand
This is the first building designed and built specifically for Auckland University College. The elegant tower pictured has been the centerpiece of the campus since its construction was completed in 1926. The Old Arts Building, as it is called, is 175 feet tall and was designed by US architect Roy Lippincott in an interpretation of the Perpendicular Gothic style with Art Nouveau elements.
Although the building originally came under fire for not being “English” enough, it is now seen as iconic. The facade uses stone cladding from Mount Somers and Oamaru, while native New Zealand plants and animals appear in the detailing.
2. Rajabai Clock Tower, University of Mumbai
Rajabai Clock Tower is located within the confines of the Fort campus of the University of Mumbai in the south of the city in India and it is 279 feet. Modeled after Big Ben in a fusion of Venetian and Gothic styles, using local Kurla stone, it is one of the landmarks in India, with one of the city’s best-stained glass windows. It once became a favorite suicide spot, so it was closed to the public.

The Main Building of the University of Texas in Austin, USA, is a Beaux Art-style clock tower, open to both students and the public. At 307 feet tall, it is one of the tallest buildings in the city, and offers a great view, while the four clock faces measuring 12 feet across are visible from across the campus. The bullet holes mark the dark 1966 mass shooting by Charles Whitman, which killed 14 and injured 31.

Joseph Chamberlain Memorial Clock Tower, also known as Old Joe, at 100m tall, is the world’s tallest freestanding clock tower. Its design is based on the Torre del Mangia campanile in Siena and is believed by many to have been the inspiration for the tower of Isengard in Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings Trilogy.
5. McGraw Tower, Cornell University, New York, USA
McGraw Tower rises to a striking 173 feet above the campus of Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. The Richardsonian Romanesque structure was designed by local architect William Henry Miller and was completed in 1891. Initially, the tower’s seven rooms were used to keep a portion of the library’s stacks safe. Now, however, McGraw contains a chimes office and practice room plus a museum. The chimes have long been an integral part of campus life, and playing them has become a hotly contested honor. History resounds here; the first set of bells rang out at Cornell’s inauguration in 1868.

The Main Building of the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, Philippines, is a squat but tall and beautiful university clock tower of 169 feet. There are three statues that surround the clock and form the “Tria Haec” representing hope, faith, and charity. Despite being designed in the early 1020s, the tower is earthquake resistant and is notably the first building in the country to have this feature.

The Ladner clock tower was constructed in 1968 with funds from Dr. Leon Ladner and his family. The clock tower honors the history of pioneering families in British Columbia, including the Ladner family, after whom the town of Ladner, an area of Delta, British Columbia, is named. The tower is 123 feet high, has four seven-foot wide faces, and houses a 330-bell Carillion

This building was built in 1922-1928 by Morley Horder for the University College of Nottingham. The site for the building was given by Sir Jesse Boot of Nottingham (founder of Boots the Chemists). It is built in a classical revival style of architecture.

The central tower of the iconic Moscow State University building constructed in the Soviet Classicist style and completed in 1953 soars a phenomenal 774 feet into the air. Each of the corner towers stands at 387 feet in height, and between them, they feature a clock, a barometer, and a thermometer. The clock is the largest in Moscow, measuring 29.5 feet in diameter, and with a 13-and-a-half-foot minute hand weighing just a hair under 86 pounds. Architect Rudnev Lev Vlavimirovich designed this and many other buildings in the area, but the Moscow State main building is regarded as his crowning glory. The university itself is also the oldest in Russia, having been founded in 1755.
