RB Leipzig declares Timo Werner’s ankle injury has caused him to be ruled out of the World Cup.
In the opening minutes of RB Leipzig’s 4-0 Champions League victory over Shakhtar Donetsk, Werner left the game due to an ankle injury. He will not be playing in the World Cup, his club team RB Leipzig has officially stated.
“Timo Werner suffered an ankle injury last night in the win over Shakhtar Donetsk,” read a club statement. “Scans today in Leipzig showed that he has unfortunately torn the syndesmosis ligament in his left ankle and will therefore be out for the rest of 2022.”
For Germany, Werner has scored 24 goals in 55 games, and manager Hansi Flick has already stated how crucial the striker’s loss will be to his squad. He stated: “It’s pretty upsetting news. I feel so bad for Timo because he was determined to play in this World Cup and will now have to sit it out. But most of all, the squad will suffer greatly from his absence. We all want him to get better quickly!”
With players like Kai Havertz, Thomas Muller, Serge Gnabry, and Leroy Sane all competing for a spot in Germany’s attack, Flick does have a variety of additional attacking alternatives he may deploy in Qatar (though Sane is currently battling a thigh problem).
Qatar 2022: Nigeria may replace Tunisia in the World cup
The 2022 FIFA World cup is less than 20 days away, yet it is not yet crystal clear whether the 32 teams that have qualified for the 2022 World Cup finals will be the 32 teams that take to the field in Qatar.
Ukraine is calling on FIFA to exclude Iran, one of England’s group opponents, from the tournament due to the reported role they’re playing in Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, while Tunisia is also at risk of being banned from the tournament.
Tunisia has been warned by FIFA that they could be excluded from the upcoming World Cup in Qatar if their government intervenes in footballing matters.
The governing body believes Deguiche is attempting to meddle in the running of Tunisia’s Football Federation (FTF) and a letter was sent to the FTF about FIFA’s concerns to which they expect a hasty response.
If FIFA does not receive the clarity they need regarding Deguiche’s comments, Tunisia risk being banned from the 2022 World Cup.
