Early Life
Hardaway was born in Chicago, Illinois on September 1, 1966, and graduated from Carver Area High School in 1985. Hardaway played college basketball for the UTEP Miners, who were coached by Don Haskins, a future Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inductee.
In 1987 and 1988, Hardaway was awarded MVP of El Paso’s Sun Bowl Invitational Tournament. He was a member of teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 1988 and 1989. In 1989, he received the Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award as the greatest college player in the country standing six feet (1.83 m) or below. Hardaway developed his crossover dribbling move known as the “UTEP two-step” while playing for the Miners.
Career
Tim Hardaway actively participated in the Golden State Warriors from 1989 to 1996. He played a pivotal role in a trio known as Run TMC, alongside Mitch Richmond and Chris Mullin. They earned recognition for their fast-break style of play.
During his time with the Warriors, they made the playoffs in 1990-91, but couldn’t beat the experienced Los Angeles Lakers despite Hardaway’s great performance. He had some excellent seasons with the Warriors, earning All-Star honors.

On February 14, 2007, during an interview on Miami’s The Dan Le Batard Show, former NBA player John Amaechi publicly announced he was gay. Hardaway said he would distance himself from a gay player he knew. The radio show host asked if he knew his comments exhibited prejudice, and Hardaway replied, “I dislike gay people, and I prefer not to be around them.” He also mentioned that if he had gay teammates, he would attempt to have them fired.
Later that day, Hardaway apologized for his remarks in a phone interview with Fox affiliate WSVN in Miami, saying, “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said I hate gay people.” He also issued a statement of apology on February 15 through his agent.
On the same day, the NBA responded to Hardaway’s comments by removing him from its All-Star Weekend activities that week. His employer, Trinity Sports, which owned the CBA Indiana Alley Cats, fired him from his position as Chief Basketball Operations Advisor, and the CBA distanced itself from his comments.
In a September 2007 interview, Hardaway talked about his February comments, saying he didn’t realize how much he had hurt many people. He called it the biggest mistake in his life and vowed to do whatever he could to make amends.
