The African Starboy, Ibrahim Ayodeji Balogun, popularly known as Wizkid recently made headlines after he was announced as one of the stars headlining the 2022 Rolling Loud music festival, the largest hip hop festival in the world.
Social media reports have it that the Global star was paid a sum of $1 Million, making him the highest-paid artist in African history. In celebration of this historic feat and in anticipation of the incoming edition, here is everything we know about the rolling loud festival
History
Despite being considered by many as the largest hip hop festival in the world, The rolling loud festival was only established in 2015 by Matt Zingler and Tariq Cherif.
The duo who were involved in the live show business, when they realized the music industry lacked a festival dedicated solely to hip-hop. They started their own company, Dope Entertainment, in 2010 and established the rolling loud festival in 2015 capitalizing on their little influence in the industry.
The festival’s very first 2015 show only attracted 6,000 participants, but in 2019 they were an estimated 210,000 attendees, the largest number the show has seen to date. The festival had to be capped at 80,000 for its 2021 Miami dates due to coronavirus restrictions.

Since the establishment of rolling loud in 2015, several other hip-hop festivals have sprung up, such as Afropunk and JMBLYA but they are yet to reach the size and hype of Rolling Loud.
Although Miami is considered the ‘mothership’ of The festival, Rolling Loud has become an international brand making its way across the globe.
So far, it has hosted successful editions of the 3-day festival in the Bay Area, Los Angeles, New York and Sydney, with upcoming shows returning to some of these venues. It is also set to hold a three days festival in Toronto and Portugal in 2022.
Performers & Headliners
The festival has also seen some of the biggest names in the hip hop industry headlining its shows. It is also the first festival to debut some of the most famous rappers at the moment.
The Rolling Loud stage has been graced with rappers like J.Cole, ASAP Rocky, Post Malone and Travis Scott Rappers like Young Thug, Lil Yachty, Kodak Blck and 21 Savage had their first festival performance at the rolling loud festival.
The festival was particularly successful at giving recognition to artists from the rap and hip-hop genres who were otherwise getting lost among other music categories at multi-genre festivals.
Based on reports Rolling loud has not only registered itself as the biggest hip hop festival but one of the fastest-growing festivals in recent times.
