Liya was made in 2000 when Tom Ford asked her for an exclusive contract for his Gucci Fall/Winter fashion show. The entire issue was devoted to her in May 2002 when she was featured on the cover of Paris Vogue.

The Richest African Young Woman Kebede ranked #1 on models.com after a $3 million contract in 2003 when she was named the newest face of Estée Lauder cosmetics. She was the only Ethiopian to serve as their representative in the company’s 57-year history.

Kebede earned $2.5 million over the previous 12 months and Forbes named her eleventh in the list of the World’s 15 Top-Earning Supermodels in July 2007. Casting agent James Scully compared her to “an exotic Grace Kelly” the following year.

Fashion Designer

Kebede’s clothing line was launched in 2007 and she named it Lemlem which means “to bloom” in Amharic. Hand-spun, woven, and embroidered apparel for women and children is available at Lemlem.

She started the company to assist preserve Ethiopian traditional weaving and provide work opportunities for local craftspeople.
