Police Clarify Identities in Viral Video

The clarification followed widespread circulation of a video that sparked public outrage after social media users alleged that police officers were openly interacting with armed bandits at a checkpoint.

According to the Force, the armed men captured in the video were community security volunteers supporting ongoing operations in Musawa and Matazu Local Government Areas of the state.

Police said the footage merely showed a routine interaction between an officer and the volunteers as they moved to a designated operational area.

    NPF Condemns Misinformation

The Force accused those behind the allegations of deliberately distorting facts to create panic and undermine public confidence in security institutions.

It said the narrative attached to the video was intended to mislead Nigerians and frustrate ongoing efforts to tackle insecurity in affected communities.

“The individuals featured in the video are not bandits. They are duly recognised members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria and registered hunters actively supporting security operations,” the statement said.

    Warning Against False Information

The police warned individuals and groups against circulating unverified information capable of threatening public peace and security.

Some of the individuals appeared to be carrying weapons openly as they passed through the checkpoint.

The video also appeared to show police officers gesturing toward the group, a development that has generated concerns and accusations of possible complicity from members of the public.

    Northwest Remains Security Hotspot

The incident comes amid persistent insecurity across several states in Northwest Nigeria, where armed groups have been linked to kidnappings, attacks on communities, cattle rustling and other violent crimes.

The motorist insisted on knowing the man’s authority to stop motorists, attracting the attention of bystanders who gathered around the scene.

    Video Triggers Online Debate

The incident quickly gained attention online, with many social media users praising the motorist for challenging what they described as the involvement of unofficial personnel in police operations.

Several commenters identified such individuals as “camp boys,” a term often used to describe civilians who allegedly assist security personnel at checkpoints.

Some users claimed they had witnessed similar situations on major roads across the country, expressing concerns about accountability and transparency during roadside checks.

    Concerns Over Checkpoint Operations
