Sultan Sa’adu Abubakar III of Sokoto is the 20th sultan of Sokoto and is the spiritual leader of Nigeria’s Muslims. However, the Sultan of Sokoto is the second richest king in Nigeria and one of the richest kings in Africa with a net worth of $100 million.
He ascended the throne in November 2006, following the death of his brother, Muhammadu Maccido, who died on ADC Airlines Flight 53.

Biography
Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar popularly known as the Sultan of Sokoto was born on 24 August 1956 in Sokoto. At the time of his birth, he was the youngest of Sir Siddiq Abubakar III the 17th Sultan who held the Sultanate for over fifty years.
After his primary school, Sultan Abubakar of Sokoto attended Barewa College in Zaria.
In 1975, he proceeded to the Nigerian Defence Academy where he was a member of the 18th Regular Course.
He served Nigerian Military and in 1977 commissioned as the second lieutenant.
Being the heir to the throne of the Qadiri branch of Sufism, Abubakar is also considered as the heir to the throne founded by his ancestor, Sheikh Usman Dan Fodio the leader of the Maliki school of Islam.
However, he has been king to this two-century throne founded by his father as the 20th sultan of Sokoto.
Before ascending the throne in 2006, he was the second lieutenant in 1977 and the presidential security unit of the Armoured Corps. The Armoured Corps that guarded General Ibrahim Babangida in the late 1980s the then military ruler.
Following the death of his brother, Muhammadu Maccido, who died on ADC Airlines Flight 53. The Sultan of Sokoto with a net worth of $100 million ascended the throne in November 2006.
