Shin Dong-joo was born in Tokyo, Japan, on 28 January 1954. He studied industrial engineering at Aoyama Gakuin University.
He worked for Mitsubishi Corporation for two years after graduating from university. Then, in 1978, he began working for the Lotte Group. He went on many jobs there, even overseeing Lotte’s US business.

Shin Dong-joo was appointed CEO of Lotte’s Japanese division in 1987. The business expanded quickly under his leadership and eventually became one of Japan’s biggest corporations. He was instrumental in increasing Lotte’s footprint in China and other Asian nations.
