All their children were tall, with Scotty Pippen being the tallest. His parents couldn’t afford to send his other siblings to college. His father worked in a paper mill until he had a stroke that paralyzed his right side, making him unable to walk and affecting his speech. Pippen attended Hamburg High School, where he played point guard. He led his team to the state playoffs and received all-conference honors as a senior but didn’t receive any college scholarship offers.

College Career

Pippen started his college playing career at the University of Central Arkansas after the school’s head basketball coach, Don Dyer, discovered him as a walk-on. He didn’t get much attention from the media because Central Arkansas played in the NAIA, while the media focused on the more prestigious NCAA. Pippen was only 6 feet 1 inch tall when he graduated from high school, but he had a growth spurt while at Central Arkansas and grew to 6 feet 8 inches. In his senior year, he averaged 23.6 points, 10 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and nearly 60 percent field goal shooting per game. These impressive stats earned him consensus NAIA All-American honors in 1986 and 1987, making him a dominant player in the Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference and catching the attention of NBA scouts.

Professional Career

Pippen made it to the  NBA All-Defensive First Team eight times in a row and the All-NBA First Team three times. He was an NBA All-Star seven times and won the NBA All-Star Game MVP in 1994. In 1996-97, they picked him as one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History. The Chicago Bulls retired his jersey, just like Jerry Sloan, Bob Love, and Jordan. He played big roles in the 1992 and 1996 Chicago Bulls Championship teams, which are among the Top 10 Teams in NBA History. The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame’s website described him as a versatile player who could run the court, grab rebounds, and score like a guard.

During his 17-year career, he spent 12 seasons with the Bulls, one with the Houston Rockets, and four with the Portland Trail Blazers, making it to the playoffs 16 times in a row. In October 2021, he was recognized as one of the greatest NBA players ever when he made it to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team.

92–

Pippen is unique in the NBA. He’s the only player to win both an NBA championship and an Olympic gold medal in the same year twice, doing it in 1992 and 1996. He was part of the 1992 U.S. Olympic “Dream Team” that dominated opponents, and he played a crucial role in the 1996 Olympic team, which included stars like Karl Malone, John Stockton, Charles Barkley, David Robinson, Shaquille O’Neal, Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway, and Grant Hill. He wore the number 8 in both years.

He got inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame twice, once for his individual career and once as part of the “Dream Team,” both on August 13, 2010. The Bulls retired his number 33 on December 8, 2005, and the University of Central Arkansas followed suit on January 21, 2010.

On April 16, 2020, Pippen revealed that the Bulls had let him go as their public relations ambassador in February. According to NBC Sports Chicago, they couldn’t agree on pay and his appearances on ESPN’s The Jump. He jokingly said, “I didn’t really want it to be public, but I’m no longer working for the Bulls. Probably a good thing, right? I prefer to be associated with winners.”

Scandinavian Comeback (2008)

Pippen made a brief return to professional basketball in January 2008, at the age of 42, when he toured Scandinavia and played two games for top Finnish league team Torpan Pojat (ToPo) and the top Swedish league team Sundsvall. On January 4, Pippen scored 12 points in ToPo’s 93-81 victory over Porvoo. On January 5, he had nine points and nine rebounds in a 98-85 win over Honka.

Pippen scored 21 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, had six assists, and two steals in 30 minutes against Akropol of Rinkeby in his third game of the tour. Pippen was paid $66,000 by the Dragons for his attendance.
